The 2022 Hollywood action film Sisu garnered considerable appreciation for its treatment and action sequences. Its success motivated the makers to make its sequel, Sisu: Road To Revenge. Just like the first part, it stars Jorma Tommila in the lead and this time, the makers promise more action and more bloodshed. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, the Finnish director of the Sisu series, Jalmari Helander, spoke about the film and more.

How many litres of fake blood were used while making Sisu: Road To Revenge?
I don’t know, but it was a lot! It was a common sight for camera operators to wear rain jackets and safety goggles because the blood was flying everywhere. It was pretty sticky!
Has this trend of having so much bloodshed and gore in films picked up in the last few years? Do you think a film like Sisu would have been possible 10 years ago?
Yes, I think so. I mean, it's hard to say, but there have been a lot of movies with a lot of fun violence even earlier, like Peter Jackson’s early films, Predator and stuff like that.
Here in India, we face a lot of censorship in our films. Even for films rated ‘A’, the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) grants cuts. Your thoughts on this practice?
I hate it so much. I can talk forever about it because we had that in Finland as well, 25-30 years ago. When I would watch films like Robocop, I didn’t see all the things that were happening in the film. It was really annoying. Later on, when I got a chance to access the original, uncut version, I was so happy to see what really went on in those movies. I don’t know what purpose is served by destroying someone’s art. If people are interested in a film, it’s their responsibility whether they want to see it or not. I don’t know what happens to Sisu: Road To Revenge when it comes down there (releases in India).

A USP of both parts of Sisu is that the protagonist, played by Jorma Tommila, doesn’t utter a single word. Were you motivated to give him something to say in the sequel, or was the plan always to keep him silent?
In the beginning, I was thinking of what he would say this time. I thought of it a lot. I came up with ideas but they were all bad! Once I figured out what needed to be filmed and when I cracked the ending and the final scene, I realized that the character should not say anything.
The first part is set in 1944, while the events of the sequel take place in 1946. Is there a possibility of having a third part on what happened in between? You can maybe also get those women from the first part. They were quite loved…
Yes, that could be a possibility. There’s also a possibility of making a film on what happened before the events of the first part or after the events of the second part. But I am not sure if I’ll do anything more in this series. Let’s see what happens.
How did the Hollywood industry react to the first part? Did they reach out to you?
A lot of them did. I talked with Dwayne Johnson and many other people who wanted to speak with me after the release of Sisu, like Charles Stahelski, Bob Odenkirk, etc.
Is there any Indian film or Indian artist that you like or admire?
I am sorry to say that I don’t know much about them. We don’t have Indian films releasing in Finland. They don’t distribute it here. But I have been hearing that there’s a similar kind of action going on, with what I am doing with Sisu. It gets compared to Indian cinema. So, I’ll have to check on that.
