Smriti Irani addressed the growing comparisons between her new show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 and the popular television serial Anupamaa, starring Rupali Ganguly. The veteran actress-politician responded firmly, underlining her show’s enduring legacy and insisting that competition comparisons were misplaced.

In a recent interview with India Today, Smriti Irani said, “I don’t look at them as competition. When somebody gets to number 30 in TRPs, then you can be our competition, right? We were there 25 years ago. If you have the capacity to be remembered for 25 years, then we will talk about competition.”

She also questioned whether newcomers could match her multifaceted career. “If you have been a three-time MP, a cabinet minister for a decade, and part of the BJP for 25 years if you want to compete, you have to be fair to everybody in the so-called competitive sphere. Do you measure up on all these standards? Then compete. You can’t have somebody who’s just started something and say, ‘Compete with Smriti Irani.’”

Reflecting on the show’s return after nearly a quarter century, Irani stressed its exceptional resonance. She said, “The competition or even referring to such a competition is unfair, because you’ll never get to 30. And you’ll never be consistently number one for eight years, which we were. The fact that we’ve had competitive mediums, and yet managed to come back after 25 years that’s remarkable.”

Irani also paid tribute to producer Ekta Kapoor, crediting her with creating what she called a television legend. “Kyunki’s success made Balaji Telefilms one of the first TV production companies to be listed on the stock exchange. So, am I competing with anybody at the Stock Exchange? I think it’s foolhardy,” she said with a wry smile.

The rivalry narrative gained momentum after Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 made a strong debut in TRP rankings, though Anupamaa has since reclaimed its dominant position.
