Director Habib Faisal’s Do Dooni Chaar completed 15 years earlier this week. The film brought together the real-life pair of Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor. The slice-of-life drama had received high acclaim. On its 15th anniversary, Habib got speaking about it in an interview with us.
Where do you position Do Dooni Chaar in your repertoire?
I position Do Dooni Chaar right on the top in the work I have done till now.
What was it like working with Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor?
Rishi sir's energy was so contagious... energized all of us. He came as a team member, not a star. Same goes for Neetu ma’am. They would rarely go to the vanity van between takes. They would hang around with other cast members, mohalle-walas. With their warmth, they just disarmed everybody. They were so excited by the challenge of middle-class space; they completely surrendered to the vision of the script and direction.
Was it difficult to convince Neetu Kapoor to come onboard?
Once Rishi sir was on board for Santosh Duggal, I eagerly asked if Neetu ma’am would play Kusum. Rishi sir told me she was planning a come-back, but with Ranbir. I waited patiently, persuaded her to listen to the script. Soon as the narration got over, she said “Yes ... I will play Kusum.”
Was it tough shooting on so many outdoor locations in Delhi?
There was usual shooting with stars on location problems. Very often Rishi sir, like a good first AD (assistant director) would charm the crowds to watch quietly and not disturb ... and the crowds cooperated.
If you had a chance to change anything in Do Dooni Chaar, what would it be?
Overall, I am fully satisfied with the film. However, if I would get a chance, I would trim the character exposition in the first ten minutes.
Why haven’t you directed anything recently?
Things are in pipeline... fingers crossed.
Wouldn’t you like to know what the Duggals are up to now?
Yes, would love to tell more of the Duggals’ stories.
