In an hush-hush secret operation, Kaun Bangega Crorepati show was attended by the former India skipper Sachin Tendulkar and actress Madhuri Dixit Nene. They were participating in the Who wants to be a millionaire clone, the Indian television's most popular game show. This special edition of KBC was to raise money for quake-ravaged Gujarat. Together, they raised 1 crore by pooling their individual winnings of Rs 50 lakh each. The show will be aired on Saturday at 8 pm.
The Big B said that the Rs 1 crore collected would be given to the Earthquake Relief Fund. However a senior Star TV spokesman said that though the thought process for contribution was on but it was not yet final where the money would go. The channel had initially thought of contributing to the Cheif Minister or Prime Minister's Earthquake Relief Fund but decided against it because of the procedural problems involved. Star TV may even adopt two or three villages for rehabilitation, the spokesman added. Apart from the Rs 1 crore won by Tendulkar and Dixit, Star TV contributed an additional Rs 41 lakh, the sum total of the participants' winnings of the last week. The Star TV staff has raised Rs 30,400 amongst themselves which will also be added to the kitty.
The two stars marched into the Studio No 7 at Film City along with host Amitabh Bachchan. The audience gave them a standing ovation. Wife Anjali and his daughter Sara accompanied Tendulkar, oozing panache in a black suit with a shimmering grey tie. Childhood friend Vinod Kambli also came in to give his dear Tendya support and company. Bachchan Jr and birthday boy Abhishekh also put in a cameo appearance.
While Tendulkar, who was a wee bit tense before the show, Dixit, on the other hand, answered the questions swiftly. Her telephone lifeline was to her her surgeon-husband surgeon Sriram Nene at Forida, for a question on the doctor who carried out the first successful heart transplant in human history. Dazzling in a peach silk saree, she struck a chord with the audience. She spoke in moving terms about the orphanage at Sassoon Hospital in Pune where some of the orphaned children in Gujarat are housed.
