Tom Cruise performs “the most dangerous stunt” in the Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One trailer

Ahead of Tom Cruise's upcoming premiere Top Gun: Maverick, which will bow on May 27, Paramount has released the official trailer for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning featuring the return of Cruise’s Ethan Hunt in the action-packed franchise.

The trailer begins with Henry Czerny's onetime Impossible Mission Force director Jim Phelps informing Cruise's superspy Ethan Hunt that his days of "fighting for the so-called greater are over." Ethan Hunt is ready to risk it all in another deadly mission that includes motorcycle stunts, car chases, and plenty of death-defying sequences as he can be seen riding a motorcycle off a mountain. Alongside Cruise, Dead Reckoning also includes the returning cast of Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Rebecca Ferguson, with newcomers Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, and Cary Elwes. Esai Morales will also appear as the film’s primary antagonist.

 

As noted by Entertainment Weekly, in last August's CinemaCon, Paramount showed footage of Cruise working with stuntmen to prepare to ride a motorbike off of a massive ramp on an also massive cliff, fly off the bike, and parachute to the ground. Writer-director McQuarrie called it not only the biggest stunt in the movie, but "by far the most dangerous stunt we've ever done." The film also suffered numerous Covid-related delays on its way to theaters. Last summer, filming was put on pause after an unknown number of positive coronavirus test results popped up during regular testing.

 

That delay famously came months after the film's star made headlines after a leaked audio clip seemingly featured him berating crew members for breaking Covid-19 safety protocols on the set. In the audio snippet, Cruise can be heard yelling, "I see you do it again, you're f---ing gone! Before that, filming in Italy shuttered in February 2020 when the country became the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe. Cruise and McQuarrie are currently shooting the film's sequel, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two.

 

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is slated to open in theaters on July 14, 2023 with Part Two set to be released on June 28, 2024.
