Kalki Koechlin talks about defying glamour expectations in Bollywood; says, “I don’t want that kind of lifestyle”

In an industry that is increasingly focused on image, Kalki Koechlin is confidently going against the grain. In a recent conversation with Aleena Dissects, the actress shared her thoughts on the pressure to maintain a glamorous persona and how not conforming to these unspoken expectations has sometimes come at a cost — both professionally and financially.

Kalki revealed, “I used to show up at the Filmfare Awards in my Swift. My dress would be bigger than the car, and sometimes security wouldn’t even let me enter. I had to pull out my invite and say, ‘It’s me!”

 

For Kalki, not having an entourage isn’t an act of rebellion but a deliberate choice based on her appreciation for spontaneity and freedom. “I don’t want that kind of lifestyle. When you don’t have an entourage, fewer people notice you. The only place where it gets hectic is at the airport — I’ve dedicated those 1.5 hours to fans and selfies.”

 

While recognizing the importance of PR and security for major stars, Kalki also critiqued the industry's fixation on appearances. “I know people who live in a one-bedroom flat but show up to meetings in an Audi with a chauffeur. Image management is everything. But I’d rather spend on living in a beautiful house in Goa and flying back to Mumbai. That’s my idea of luxury.”

 

Her candid remarks come at a time when the industry is actively discussing the rising costs of entourages and performative stardom. Kalki’s perspective offers a refreshing reminder that success doesn’t always have to be defined by designer labels and a crowd of assistants.

 

Last seen in the Tamil action-romance Nesippaya, the actress is now preparing for her next English-language film, Emma and Angel.
