Aryan Khan to be lodged in the jail that once housed Sanjay Dutt, Ajmal Kasab, Chhota Rajan, and Abu Salem

Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan's bail plea was rejected by a Mumbai court on Friday. The court also rejected the bail pleas of co-accused Munmun Dhamecha and Arbaaz Merchant. They were arrested on October 3 after the Narcotics Control Bureau conducted a raid on Goa bound cruise ship from Mumbai. With their bail peas rejected, Aryan Khan and the other accused will be lodged in Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai. Aryan Khan will not be given any special treatment and will be treated like every other under-trial prisoner.

The Mumbai Central Prison, popularly known as Arthur Road Jail was built in 1926 and is Mumbai's largest and oldest prison. The jail occupies 2 acres of land and was declared central jail in 1972. While the prison was originally built to accommodate 800 prisoners, it is often reported that the place is overcrowded. In 2021, eight new barracks were added to the hail which could house 200 additional inmates.

 

The jail has seen some notable prisoners over the year including:

 

Sanjay Dutt: The actor was imprisoned for his role in the 1993 bomb blasts. He was kept in a high-security cell near the anda cell where Abu Jundal was kept.

 

Ajmal Kasab: He was the only terrorist hailing from Pakistan who was caught alive during the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai. In November 2012, Kasab was hanged at the Yerwada Jail in Pune.

 

Chhota Rajan: He was lodged in Arthur Road jail temporarily, He is currently in Tihar Jail awaiting trial in almost 7-cases

 

Abu Salem: He is a convict in the 1993 bomb blast case. He was later shifted to Taloja prison after he was attacked in Arthur Road Jail by gangster Mustafa Dossa.

 

Mustafa Dossa: He was also a convict in the 1993 bomb blast case. He died in 2017 at Mumbai's JJ Hospital due to cardiac arrest.

 

Arun Gawli: He was convicted for the murder of Shiv Sena leader and corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar in 2012. He was initially kept in Arthur Road Jail before being shifted to Nagpur Central Prison where he is serving life imprisonment.
