In the present-day, moviegoers have been exposed to several films that are replete with profanities or adult-themed dialogues. A lot of web series, too, have been in this zone. But 20 years ago, a lot of movie buffs got a chance to experience such dialogues and moments for the first time when they saw Kaante (2002). As this acclaimed thriller completed 20 years, director Sanjay Gupta exclusively spoke to Bollywood Hungama about this aspect.

20 Years of Kaante EXCLUSIVE: Sanjay Gupta REVEALS the CRAZY audience reaction he witnessed in Chandan cinema: “When audiences heard dialogues like ‘Big Boobs Rosy’ and ‘iski biwi ke saath tha’, they went BONKERS kyunki unhone pehle kabhi aisa kuch suna hi nahin tha kisi film mein”

When asked if he ever went to the cinema halls to check the audience reaction, he said, “There was Chandan cinema right next to my office. We used to keep visiting to check the feedback. The audience was going mad. When audiences heard dialogues like ‘Big Boobs Rosy’ and ‘iski biwi ke saath tha’, they went bonkers kyunki unhone pehle kabhi aisa kuch suna hi nahin tha kisi film mein.”

Kaante starred Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Kumar Gaurav, Lucky Ali and Mahesh Manjrekar, and was a story of six Indians looting a bank in Los Angeles, USA. One of them, however, is a hidden cop and this track makes for a great watch in the second half. In the pre-social media era, a lot of SMSes went around about the suspense of the film. Almost all of them were fake, stating that Amitabh Bachchan was the villain or Sanjay Dutt is the villain.

Was Sanjay Gupta worried that the real ending of the film would get leaked out? The director-produced replied, “No. Tab hum itna sochte bhi nahin the, yaar! Today, we constantly fear that someone might tweet the ending.”

Sanjay Gupta also had no apprehensions that Amitabh Bachchan was seen in Aankhen (2002) in the same year which also revolved around a bank robbery. “We didn’t even think about it and didn’t even talk about it,” he stated.

And was he worried about Kaante’s clash with Saathiya? He explained, “Not at all. Kaante and Saatiya were two distinct films. It was a classic case of Dil (1990) and Ghayal (1990)  Lagaan (2001) and Gadar (2001). When two good films have released together, they have always done well. As a matter of fact, they complement each other. Koi ek film dekh leta hai, then he/she will discuss ‘Woh dusri film bhi acchi hai. Chalo ab woh dekhte hai’.”

Sanjay Gupta was asked if Anurag Kashyap was involved as a writer initially and that the two had a fallout. Sanjay clarified, “When we were writing the first draft, Anurag was on board. Shivam Nair was also in the writing team. But we mutually decided that it was not working and hence, Anurag and I parted ways.”

Lastly, Sanjay Gupta opened up about why the film took a while to release, “Kaante had three producers – me, Pritish Nandy and Raju Patel. The film had the quickest production schedule in history. It was made in 33 days flat. The shoot was completed in the first week of October 2001 but it was released on December 20, 2002. For more than a year, the film was stuck due to a feud between the partners. Mr Nandy was not accepting the accounts given by the other producer. There were these internal legal issues which took a lot of time to be resolved. Hence, the delay.”
