'Azaadi' dropped

Before the release of JAAGO, Mehul Kumar had announced another film, AZAADI, with Manoj Bajpai essaying the main role. But after the cold response to JAAGO, Mehul has decided to do some serious rethinking about the kind of movies he plans to make in the future. I've aborted the plans of making AZAADI, Mehul confesses. Reason? I don't think people are in a mood to watch realistic and hard-hitting fares anymore. Films that depict reality are an absolute no-no in today's times. The cinegoers prefer feel-good entertainers to realistic fares any day, he reasons. So what is the maker of KRANTIVEER and TIRANGAA planning next? I am planning to start three films simultaneously. I'll direct the first film myself, while the remaining two will be made by other directors. There's a valid reason behind this strategy. It's no point making one film and sitting idle for the next ten months, waiting for the stars to dole out dates, he states. He continues in the same breath, People like Yash-ji [Chopra] and Karan [Johar] are entrusting the directorial reins to outsiders, thereby making multiple projects at any given time. That's how business houses grow into empires, the veteran states. So do we see Mehul Kumar going the Chopra and Johar way, in terms of relegating authority to talent outside his production office as also by making the kind of cinema they specialize in?
