Remaking a classic is always an onerous task. A film produced by the great BR Chopra and directed by Yash Chopra, Ittefaq was based on the Gujarati play ‘Dhummas’. It was a thriller that starred Rajesh Khanna (at a time when he was giving one hit after another as a romantic superstar) and Nanda. Yash Chopra sahab was known for his brilliant sense of music (Waqt had already released) and Ittefaq had no songs. It was a clutter breaker in many ways and is an undisputed classic of Indian cinema.
The remake of Ittefaq is helmed by producers Dharma Productions, Red Chillies Entertainment and BR Films. The film is directed by Ravi Chopra sahab’s son Abhay Chopra. His Mom Renu Chopra ji gave a classic memento to me today, a framed picture of Rajesh Khanna and Nanda on one side and the one with Sidharth Malhotra and Sonakshi Sinha in the other. Renu ji is such a graceful and beautiful lady. Somehow the wives and mothers of film personalities don’t get as much credit as they deserve. They are privy to various stages of film narrations, give priceless suggestions and provide unstinted support during the tough journey of movie making. I believe someone should write a book to celebrate women who selflessly nurture movies…behind the scenes!
The promo of Ittefaq is an exhilarating experience. You take back the stinging dialogues of Akshaye Khanna. He plays the tough nut Police Inspector who doesn’t suffer fools (even when they are not human). Sidharth Malhotra is intense, vulnerable and defeated all at the same time. Sonakshi Sinha possesses chameleon like deviousness and victimhood and you are left figuring out what was she all about.
Mr Karan Johar was present at the promo preview today. He informed that, like the original, there is no song in the film. The interesting part that he revealed was that as per the marketing strategy the principle star cast won’t be doing any media interviews before the release of the film. Producer Junoo Chopra informed me that they will be having a promotional song but it won’t be a part of the film.
Ittefaq releases on November 3.
