Vishal Bhardwaj reveals what went wrong with Rangoon: "The release date was set. But we were not getting the VFX for the final scene right. I should have put my foot down like Sanjay Leela Bhansali does"

Vishal Bhardwaj’s films might not have been huge hits but he always scores when it comes to critical acclaim. Almost all his films have earned massive respect and are memorable even today, be it Maqbool (2004), Omkara (2006), The Blue Umbrella (2007), Kaminey (2009), Haider (2014) etc. Rangoon (2007) was an exception. Mounted on a huge scale, it was released with loads of expectations. It brought Vishal and Saif Ali Khan together after the unforgettable Omkara and also brought the director and Shahid Kapoor again after the much-loved Kaminey and Haider. Kangana Ranaut’s casting also added to the buzz. However, the period epic drama had an underwhelming opening. The niche appeal didn’t impress the masses. Even the target audience, the classes, were not happy. Hence, it collected just Rs. 20.68 crores and thus was a box office disaster.

Vishal Bhardwaj reveals what went wrong with Rangoon: "The release date was set. But we were not getting the VFX for the final scene right. I should have put my foot down like Sanjay Leela Bhansali does"

During an interaction with Mid-Day’s Mayank Shekhar, Vishal Bhardwaj opened up about Rangoon and what, according to him, was his takeaway from the film’s failure. Vishal Bhardwaj answered, “It would be on the technical aspects. The release date was set. But we were not getting the VFX for the final scene right. I should have put my foot down. Held the release, like Sanjay Leela Bhansali does.”

Vishal Bhardwaj further said, “I was making a Rs 70 crore film in a Rs. 35 crore budget. I had become overconfident from all that we had managed to achieve, even on the VFX front, coming from Haider.”

Rangoon was set in 1943 and is the story of a rising film star, a handicapped ex-actor and scion of a production house and a British Indian officer, who secretly is loyal to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s Indian National Army. The tense climax of the film was set on a bridge at the border of India and Burma. A chunk of the film was shot in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.
