‘Kaanta Laga’ fame Shefali Jariwala opens up about epilepsy struggles: Battled low self-esteem and isolation in school

Shefali Jariwala, popularly known as the 'Kaanta Laga' girl, has come a long way since her debut in the music video that took the nation by storm in the early 2000s. From being a dancing sensation to becoming a successful entrepreneur, Shefali has proven that she is more than just a pretty face. However, the actress had her own share of struggles, including her battle with epilepsy. Speaking on the same note recently, Shefali opened up on how it affected her life.

During her conversation with ETimes, the former Bigg Boss contestant recalled, “I had my first seizure when I was 15, and for a decade, living with epilepsy was a challenge. Mood and anxiety disorders affected schoolwork and social functioning. At that age, expressing feelings of hopelessness and helplessness was impossible.”

 

She further explained, “I had such low self-esteem. But as I grew older, there were newer challenges. The stress of having a seizure at an inappropriate time and place always loomed over my head, especially after ‘Kaanta Laga’ when I was shooting and performing on stage, travelling so much.”

 

Concluding her conversation, Jariwala said, “That’s all in the past now. Medicines, a strong support system, and positive lifestyle changes have helped me. And now I’m seizure-free for 15 years. Overcoming epilepsy has made me mentally stronger, and physically fitter, and I am living my best life now.”

 

This is not the first time, when Shefali has openly talked about her struggles with epilepsy. In December last year, the actress was quoted by the same portal saying, “I had an epilepsy seizure at the age of 15. I remember at that time I was under tremendous pressure to do well in my studies. Stress and anxiety can lead to seizures. It's interrelated, you could get a seizure due to depression and vice versa.”
