Homebound set to stream on Netflix: India’s Oscar entry begins its global journey

India’s official entry for the 98th Academy Awards, Homebound, is finally set to reach audiences across 190 countries as it begins streaming on Netflix from November 21. The film, which resonated deeply during its theatrical and festival circuit journey, is now gearing up for a massive global release on the streamer.

Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, Homebound arrives with the backing of an impressive production team led by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, Somen Mishra, along with co-producers Marijke deSouza and Melita Toscan Du Plantier. Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese and Pravin Khairnar serve as Executive Producers, further elevating the project’s global weight.

 

At its heart, the film follows the lives of childhood friends Shoaib (Ishaan Khatter) and Chandan (Vishal Jethwa), bonded by their shared dream of joining the police force. Janhvi Kapoor’s role adds an emotional core to a story rooted in friendship, loyalty, and the social pressures faced by young people in contemporary India.

 

Reflecting on the film’s intent, director Neeraj Ghaywan said, “Inspired by a true story of friendship, Homebound explores the universal themes of connection and compassion as forms of quiet resistance. After screening in competition at some of the world’s most prestigious festivals and loved by everyone, it has now found a home on Netflix, reaching audiences in 190 countries. The film made waves internationally with its premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2025, followed by a strong showing at TIFF where it secured the Second Runner-Up position for the International Audience Choice Award. With its universal themes and powerful performances, the film is now ready to find a new, global audience.
