Abhishek Kapoor celebrates 4 years of Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui: "I feel proud and humbled to have directed it"
It has been four years since Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui released in theatres, and the Ayushmann Khurrana and Vaani Kapoor starrer continues to be remembered for its sensitive and mature handling of a socially relevant subject that was rarely explored in mainstream Hindi cinema at the time.
Directed by Abhishek Kapoor, the film stood out for attempting to spark conversations around identity and acceptance, while still remaining rooted in a mainstream narrative. Over the years, it has found continued appreciation from audiences for its intent and honesty, gradually earning the status of a clutter-breaking film.
Reflecting on the film’s journey on its fourth anniversary, Abhishek Kapoor said, “The journey of Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui was transformative, and I feel incredibly proud and humbled to have directed it. The project demanded a deep sense of clarity and courage, for me as a director and for Ayushmann Khurrana and Vaani Kapoor as actors. Even after four years, the audiences pour so much love into Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui that it feels nothing less than a blessing.”
At a time when formula-driven storytelling continued to dominate the industry, Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui chose to take a different route. The film addressed a sensitive theme that had seldom been represented on screen with nuance, eventually emerging as a landmark title in the context of transgender representation in Indian cinema.
