Box Office: Sonakshi Sinha changes gears with her first female centric film, Akira

 

She made one of the fastest rise to the top with a flurry of Rs. 100 crore hits. With as many as five centuries to her name, Sonakshi Sinha soon turned out to be one of the most dependent leading ladies in Bollywood. Of course, most of these were front loaded by the leading men that she was paired with. Still, a hit is a hit is a hit. In the middle of this all she also took the 'serious acting' route and won accolades with Lootera. After being in the industry for almost six years, it was time for Sonakshi to explore newer stuff. The failure of 'masala' flicks Action Jackson, Lingaa and Tevar further consolidated this thought! She decided to take a stock of her career and chose to try something remarkably different. While being in a female centric film is one thing, to actually do an action role in one such affair is something altogether different. Rani Mukerji [Mardaani] and Priyanka Chopra [Jai Gangaajal] did that after spending substantial time in the industry. Anushka Sharma [NH10] did that in time similar to that of Sonakshi Sinha though.

 

While NH10 had a weekend of Rs. 13.25 crore, Akira has collected 16.65 crore. The film has seen a bigger release though through Fox. However, from the audience footfalls perspective, there has been a decent response at the Box Office. Of course successes like Neerja and Mary Kom have shown that audience is ready to give heroines a lot more consideration for their on-screen presence.
