Manjhi- the mountain man (Shandaar, zabardast, Zindaabad) Manjhi- The mountain man, which is inspired from life story of Dashrath Manjhi, reflects the darker side of India where the basic facilities still lacks. Manjhi lives in a village in Bihar where people have to cross the mountain to go to nearby town to avail basic facilities like schooling, medical facilities etc. Manjhi who characterizes a below poverty level man breaks the mountain single handed using only hammer and chisel to make the path in his wife's memory who died after slipping from mountain while climbing the mountain while pregnant to get basic facilities like water. Manjhi proves that true love has power and you need not to spend money to prove your devotion to your love. He chooses to get the solution and make his life meaningful by doing at least one productive work for the other villagers. The story goes emotional when the villagers, who later help Dashrath, criticize him and calls him mad. But determined and positive Dashrath continues breaking mountain even during period of drought conditions when he has to spend nights without food, water and any support from his friends or family. He keeps working even after he is bitten by a poisonous snake while breaking mountain which makes him to cut his toe with the same hammer and chisel which he uses to break mountain. He fights with corruption, politics and others who come on his way and finally he fulfills his dream of making a path through the mountain with help of his beloved wife’s memory. The story picturises how true determination with positive approach to your dream can do wonders and make impossible the possible. It shows that dirty politics existed even when it was originated. Corruption and politics are the two factors which force the poor people to fight for their rights which they truly deserve. Corruption is the reason why the real needy remain unattended. The government authorities also wake up doing their duty when they see the chance to earn the black money/ bribe. When the victim of corruption gets helpless, he chooses to be a rebel and brings revolution to end corrupts. The story really inspires others to stand for own say. No one will care and value you especially when you have no money power if you do not fight for your deserving rights. By the time you get intermission you get to get connected with Manjhi. You start to feel good and strengthened when Manjhi gets supported by his friends and villagers, when he accomplishes his dream, whenever in the movie he gets strengthened and happy. With Nawazuddin Siddiqui being truly incredible as Dashrath Manjhi, Radhika Apte also has done great work doing justice to her character let it be as a toy seller, as a true lover, as a loving wife or as a caring mother. She looks most attractive even in her simple attire which goes with her character. Hats off to the real hero Dashrath Manjhi, the director- Ketan Mehta who thought of making this film and the actors who relive and remind us of the real charact1ers.

Manjhi- Movie Review by Shoby 3.25 Stars out of 5 Cinema is all about entertainment but what comes a surprise is when you get to see information that enhances motivation embroiled in thorough entertainment. Ketan Mehta is known for making some real Path Breaking cinema. From Maya Memsaab to Mangal Paandey, he has a habit of exploring diverse genres and providing films that leave an impact on the viewer. This time, he yet again attempted to bring a true anecdote to the celluloid. Dashrath Manjhi- An unsung hero, who dug a mountain to explore a pathway in order to connect village Gehlore to other part of India. Now this subject was difficult to make, not only because it required to present a make-believe cinematic product but also to keep the entertainment factor in the right quantity, so that viewer may not get dragged or bored, due to the dryness of subject matter. This film should be applauded for its top notch screenplay, which never allows you to turn your eyes away. Such a tight gripping script with pitch perfect dialogues, that has a favor of Behaari local lingo, which used to be spoken in 50s and 60s in Indian Behar. The real hero of the movie is the great Nawaz uddin Siddiqui. This guy is more than a huge talent. Right after one another, he is continually making Indian cinema proud by giving his best shots in every other movie. After Kick, Badlapur, recently blockbuster Bajrangi Bhaijan, now he has nailed it in Manjhi. Not even a single frame, you will find him losing the grip from the character. A special mention is due for Radhika Apte too. She was almost pitch perfect in the role of Dhasrath's wife- Phaguniya. Some sequences need to be mentioned particularly here. When Nawazuddin says to his daughter, how many times I have told you not to climb this mountain, what will I say to Phaguniya. His mud shot, where he along with Radhika Apte disappear in mud. When Dhasrtath's father say to Mukhiya, "Babua ka haath dukh jaey ga Malik, hum khud hi maar letey hain. The daffodil's shot, right after the dead of the wife of Dhasrath's friend. This is one film that I watched some of its scenes with moist eyes. What an emotional connect, Ketan has created with the audience. Art direction is yet another USP of Ketan Mehta's products. He did it with great authenticity in Mangal Pandey and this time he has yet again done with utmost greatness. He has beautifully shown the village ambiance of 50s and 60s. This time of subject does not need fabricated music and dance numbers. Background score was good and a couple of songs were used just to make the story progress further. Editing is crisp. Overall, this film is not to be missed at any cost. Just respect for Nawazuddin for showing this great acting display. Shandaar... Zabardast.. Zindabad...

Until now Mirch Masala (1985) was what Ketan Mehta was known for. His foray into biographies didn't go well in the last decade of the previous century, but his latest attempt is really a shot in right direction. The non-linear screenplay introduces its audience to a rural village in the interiors of the Indian state of Bihar, which is partially run by a fascist authority in the 1950s-60s. A young boy named Dashrath Manjhi, born to poor farmer parents, is married off to a girl when boys his age would instead fancy playing tag, and is soon after sent away closer to the cities so that he is not exposed to the government's cruel ways. Fast forward a decade and a half - an adult Manjhi (Siddiqui) returns to his village, meets his wife Phaguniya (Apte), and starts a cheerful married life. He realizes that their happy days are over when his wife slips and falls off a huge hillock which eventually results in her death. Manjhi, a high-willed, idiosyncratic lover boy that he is, vows to avenge her death by locking horns with the hill; and his idea of revenge: tearing the mountain apart. The non-linearity plays out like a documentary without a good prologue, which compels a viewer to ask too many questions, at least in the first act. However, considering that one is unknown to the story which is true to some extent, once you get a fair idea as to what is happening, the middle act and conclusion is very fine. Chronicling the two strenuous decades that the mountain man spent breaking the peak with just the help of a chisel and a hammer is not what the film is all about. There is politics and history, and the way the former is showcased can polarize the opinions. I say documentary-like because a journalist character in the film kind of poorly narrates Manjhi's struggle in terms of years, making it look like a chronology test of a 10-year old. The humor is very light, and is strictly delivered by Siddiqui. His performance is top-notch and I can even risk saying that he is second to none when it comes to portraying a character like Manjhi, who was known for his madness and extraordinary determination. Although he is the star of the film in its most basic sense, I personally think that his characterization was type-cast as if making him do certain things is a norm now. Talking about Miss Elegance, I have grown fond of Apte over the years. Be it her bombed Malayalam language film Haram (2015) or her viral short film Ahalya (2015), her performance is something that you cannot term as acting; she lives her character. The biggest problem I had with the script was that I didn't know what went on Manjhi's mind before, during, and after he took on the impossible job. There is no insight into his strategy, if there was any, or at least the basic intention or the layout. This made it feel like we are watching a soap opera that is high on background noise, but low on substance. Still, there is a point towards the end where Manjhi realizes how his material nemesis was both cruel and kind enough to first kill his wife, and then let him break it apart, respectively; and that is the gist of the story. Nevertheless, the make-up, costumes, dialogs, and production design are brilliant. Lots of sub-stories were unnecessarily inserted into the period drama, which could have been a lot more solid had the makers focused solely on the feat. With Siddiqui at the helm, Mr. Mehta relies on cast performance and a legend story to steer a vehicle that has boxes in place of tires. BOTTOM LINE: Manjhi - The Mountain Man is no doubt a hard-worked depiction of an incredible story of a man who broke a mountain to prove his love, only that when you compare it with a similar but famous story of the Taj Mahal, you will still go with the latter. That is the powerlessness of the film.
