On the 71st birth anniversary of late actor Smita Patil on October 17, her husband Raj Babbar and son Prateik Smita Patil remembered her through heartfelt social media posts. While Raj reflected on her exceptional talent and lasting contribution to cinema, Prateik and his wife, actor Priya Banerjee, shared an emotional note describing Smita as his “guardian angel”.
Smita Patil, regarded as one of the most accomplished actors of her generation, died on December 13, 1986, at the age of 31 due to complications following childbirth. Nearly four decades after her death, her work continues to be remembered for its depth and impact on Indian cinema.
Raj Babbar remembers Smita Patil on her birth anniversary
Raj Babbar paid tribute to his late wife by recalling her sensitivity as an actor and the lasting impression she left through her performances. Sharing his note, he wrote, “Smita had a rare sensitivity. Though her journey was tragically brief, her artistry left an indelible imprint. She didn’t merely portray characters - she breathed life into their very souls.”
He further added, “I miss her. Her warmth, her extraordinary talent, and everything that made her so special. Remembering Smita Patil on her birth anniversary. Her legacy continues to inspire, move, and resonate across generations. Artists leave this world when they are called - but Smita left behind a part of herself in every heart she touched.”

Prateik and Priya Banerjee also remembered Smita with a joint social media post. Addressing her as his “guardian angel”, Prateik expressed his belief that her presence and blessings continue to guide him through life.
The note began, “happy forever heavenly birthday my guardian angel / this physical world was too weak to witness our love but we always had other plans."
The note further read, “i feel your blessings and protection through every moment of my existence and more deeply with the moments in this journey that are meant to define me and understand who i really am and why we chose this journey together and for eachother”
Reflecting on the bond he feels with his mother, he continued, “in retrospect i now understand how and why you’ve always been watching over me blessing me and protecting me from this cruel world through victory and defeat through the inevitable and deceit.”
The post also spoke about their connection in spiritual terms. “energy can neither be created nor destroyed but then we’ve so beautifully and carefully created an energy that was always written to be intertwined with our souls and be limitless and it most certainly can never be destroyed / our spark will never fade our fire will never diminish our light will always burn bright”
Smita Patil was born on October 17, 1955, and went on to establish herself as a prominent figure in Indian cinema through performances that earned her critical acclaim. Her filmography included several significant works, and her approach to portraying complex characters continues to be discussed by film enthusiasts.
The actor gave birth to her son, Prateik Babbar, on November 28, 1986. She developed a severe postpartum infection and died on December 13, 1986, at a Mumbai hospital. Her death at the age of 31 came as a shock to the film industry.
