Not many would remember that Shefali Shah was first seen in a cameo in Ram Gopal Varma’s iconic Rangeela in 1995. Hence, she completed 30 years as an actor this year. She spoke about her career and her latest outing Delhi Crime Season 3 in an interview with us.

Shefali Shah on Delhi Crime Season 3, "Thank God, now there are complex, multi-dimensional roles written for women", also speaks about completing 30 years in the movies

You started your career on the big screen with Rangeela in 1995 where you did a memorable cameo as a tantrum-throwing actress

Yes, and then came Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding. I think that and Satya were my real beginning in the movies. Actually it all started long before on satellite television with Banegi Apni Baat.

The third season of Delhi Crime has fetched you massive praise. Are you content with the response?

I was petrified before the show dropped. I was, in fact, scared that the way I’ve perceived and behaved as Vartika Chaturvedi, may or may not land. But once the reviews started coming, I was ecstatic. I couldn’t stop crying. Crying out of relief that not only has she been understood but yet again my character and I have gotten so so much love.

Three seasons later, how do you relate to your character? Does Vartika Chaturvedi go home with you?

I related to her even in Season 1. We both are very similar. The passion and obsession for what we do. Intensely emotional and sensitive. No facade. Honest, sometimes too much, and righteous …at least I like to believe I am. As far as taking her home is concerned, Vartika is a character that’s very very very dear to me. I never want to get over her. But it’s not like I bring the aftermath of the scenes home.

Did you ever think the series would go this far? What do you think is the reason for its renewable relevance?

No I had no clue where this series was even going to be showcased. Netflix came in later after it was done. All I knew was we were creating something very special. It’s as real, raw and honest as it gets. Things that are around us but probably don’t notice or choose to look away. Delhi Crime brings it to light. Even the technical excellence, the performances, the team… I think people are emotionally invested in the characters Vartika, Bhupinder, Neeti and all. It’s a mirror to the society that compels us to reflect on the reality.

As a woman and a professional, how relatable is Vartika's constant struggle to balance her job with family responsibilities?

Very very relatable. She loves her family and she loves her job to the point of obsession. She thrives on cleaning up the city hoping to make it a better place and yet wants to spend time with her family. Juggling is a second nature to her, like it is for many women, including me. Luckily, she’s got a very understanding husband who understands her need to be on her own and do her own thing, probably also because he’s in the same profession as her. I didn’t realise how similar it is to my own home!

As a thinking actor, how difficult is it for you to find challenging roles?

Honestly, thank God, now there are complex, multi-dimensional roles written for women. Not all but there are some and luckily the physical appearance or age doesn’t matter.

Where would you place Delhi Crime in your impressive oeuvre?

Delhi Crime changed my career’s trajectory. The way I approach a project and work on it. Because of it I’m getting the kind of parts I want to do. It’s definitely on the top.

What do we get next from you?

Next is a film with Vipul (husband Vipul Shah). He’s produced and directed it. It’s a bank heist. A very entertaining and witty script. There’s Jaideep Ahlawat, Abhishek Banerjee, Srishti Shrivastava … a very good ensemble cast. It should be released early next year. I also shot for a dark comedy/thriller genre film, which is in post-production. That apart, I’ve read a couple of scripts that interest me but let’s see when and how they materialise.
