Sadhguru addresses expectations around Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana

Ranbir Kapoor’s casting as Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming Ramayana has drawn mixed reactions from audiences. Known for completely immersing himself in roles such as Sanju and Animal, Ranbir has reportedly faced a unique challenge this time — meeting the expectations of not only fans but also devotees.

The film, which stars Ranbir as Lord Rama — a revered deity in Hinduism — is still about a year away from release, yet discussions and debates around it are already in full swing. Recently, spiritual leader Sadhguru spoke about the growing hype and “unrealistic” expectations surrounding Ranbir’s portrayal, offering some straightforward advice to the actor.

During a conversation between Ramayana producer Namit Malhotra and Sadhguru at the Isha Foundation, the two discussed the film and the pressure faced by its cast. The interaction was later shared on the film’s official YouTube channel.

When Namit mentioned how the actors playing Lord Ram, Hanuman, and Sita are expected to embody these divine figures, Sadhguru responded, “If they have sense, they should become. It’s an opportunity to play the role of Rama, so they should transform themselves. When else in life would they get such a chance? At the same time, there will be unrealistic expectations.”

Sadhguru cited the example of Telugu cinema legend N. T. Rama Rao, who was deeply admired for his portrayals of Lord Krishna and other mythological roles. “People worshipped him because he played Krishna in many films. They even put up huge cutouts of him with a flute, and he later won elections because of that image. If you play Rama in a film, people expect to see some gentleness in you. It’s unfair to the actor because it’s a profession, but if acting like Rama brings some of his qualities into the actor, that’s a wonderful thing,” Sadhguru explained.

Namit also mentioned that some fans criticized Ranbir’s casting based on his earlier film choices or past remarks. Responding to that, Sadhguru said, “It’s not fair to judge him for what he did in past roles. In the future, he might even play Ravana — that’s what professional actors do. But at the same time, a film’s success depends on the audience, not just on actors or directors. So, their expectations can’t be ignored entirely. It’s a heavy responsibility, but I believe the actor and director should imbibe some of Lord Ram’s qualities while making Ramayana.”

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra under Prime Focus Studios, Ramayana is being made as a two-part epic and is expected to be one of the most expensive Indian films ever. The cast includes Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Ravie Dubey as Lakshman, and Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman.

Ramayana: Part One is set to release in theatres on Diwali 2026, followed by Part Two on Diwali 2027.
