EXCLUSIVE: Jackie Shroff reveals how he became ‘Jackie’ from ‘Jaikishan’: “Had a classmate in school who felt that Jaikishan was too long”

Veteran actor Jackie Shroff is a name in the film industry known to all. His inspiring rags-to-riches tale and stardom over the decades has been a story narrated to generations. He made his debut in 1983 with Subhash Ghai’s Hero. He went on to star in over 200 films in multiple languages and is considered one of the icons in the industry. His ‘Bombay’ dialect and his charisma often make him go viral on social media.

In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Jackie Shroff spoke in Hindi and revealed, “My mother used to call me Jaggu, my friends used to call me Jaggu dada, my father used to call me Jaikishan… Some used to call me Jai, others used to call me Kishan. I have many names, you can call me whatever you want, just say it with love.”

 

When asked how he became Jackie from Jaikishan, he said, “I had a classmate in school, who came from Hong Kong or Dubai. He felt that Jaikishan was a long name, so he told me that we should have some fun with it. He started calling me Jai-ki, and from there, it evolved to Jackie. My name has kept changing, but I’m still the same.”

 

On the work front, Jackie Shroff was last seen in the film Phone Bhoot. The film stars Katrina Kaif, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ishaan Khattar. It released on November 4, 2022. He will next be seen in the film Life’s Good.
