James Gunn to direct Superman: Legacy film from his own script
James Gunn is officially gearing up for his new Superman franchise with Superman: Legacy! As revealed on Wednesday, Gunn will helm the feature from his own script that he’s been writing since before he became the co-head of DC Studios.
As Variety notes, Superman: Legacy is the first in a planned universe of cross-platform storytelling (presumably one that will mingle with streaming projects for HBO Max) in a Phase 1 the studio is calling “Gods and Monsters.” Cast has not yet been announced, but the film is dated for a global theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
As per the official synopsis of the film, Superman: Legacy “tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Sharing the news on Twitter, Gunn also went on to share an emotional anecdote related to the feature. “I lost my Dad almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn’t understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and my love of film and I wouldn’t be making this movie now without him,” Gunn wrote.
“It has been a long road to this point. I was offered Superman years ago — I initially said no because I didn’t have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved,” he shared before adding that “a bit less than a year ago I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage — how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.”
Superman: Legacy is slated for a theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
