Kalank Box Office Collections: The Varun Dhawan – Alia Bhatt starrer Kalank surpasses Ajay Devgn’s Total Dhamaal; becomes 3rd highest opening weekend grosser of 2019

The Abhishek Varman directed multi starrer Kalank that featured Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Sonakshi Sinha and Aditya Roy Kapur hit screens last week. Released on Wednesday Kalank that enjoyed a five day extended weekend was expected to set new box office benchmark records. However, the film recorded a lacklustre performance at the box office with collections showing a downward trend.

In this box office report we take a look at the opening weekend collections of Kalank while comparing the same to previous releases of 2019. Collecting Rs. 66.03 cr Kalank that came with immense hype seems to have underperformed, especially since the estimated target for the film was achieving close to if not in excess of Rs. 100 cr over its extended weekend. But despite this, Kalank has managed to become the third highest opening weekend grosser of 2018, surpassing the collections of the Ajay Devgn starrer Total Dhamaal that had collected Rs. 62.40 cr. Apart from this, Kalank has recorded better opening weekend collection figures than other releases like Manikarnika - The Queen Of Jhansi that collected Rs. 41.35 cr, Uri - The Surgical Strike that collected Rs. 35.73 cr, Luka Chuppi that collected Rs. 32.13 cr, Badla that collected Rs. 23.20 cr, Romeo Akbar Walter that collected Rs. 20.85 cr, and Junglee that collected Rs. 13.85 cr.

 

However, on the other hand the five day opening weekend collections of Kalank do not manage to surpass the collections of previous releases Kesari that collected Rs. 78.07 cr and Gully Boy that collected Rs. 72.45 cr. Interestingly, both Kesari and Gully Boy enjoyed four day extended weekends on this respective release.

 

As of now with Kalank seeing a massive drop in collections, expectations are that the film will face an uphill task over the coming week days to post decent box office numbers. With just a few days left till the mega release of Avengers: Endgame all that remains to be seen is whether the film manages to make it past the Rs. 100 cr mark.
