Ace designer Kunal Rawal speaks about styling Shahid Kapoors three different looks in Teri Meri Kahaani.

1910: Javed in Sargoda, a village near Lahore in undivided India

Character Sketch

Javed is a very free spirit and is the most heroic character out of the three. He is somebody who does things first and thinks later. He is slightly cocky and is a heavy womanizer. He is a very bold character and is somebody who wears his heart on his sleeve. He doesnt follow rules, fashion and trends, and dresses like he wants to. Since he is an Indian in 1910, during the British Raj, he is a little rebellious and that is something that I have tried to get across in his clothes too.

Styling

In those days there werent any fashionable clothes stores. Fashion was constrained to what your local darzi could do. The fabrics we have picked up for Javed are slightly different. His gets his outfit cut in the way he likes and he chooses the colour himself. He tweaks his pattern to the level that the local darzi could, so he cuts off his sleeves and rolls them up. He has four buttons but he never uses them as he is somebody who takes good care of his body and wants to show that to the girls. Silhouette wise, Javed wears pathanis when he is out. His footwear is restricted to his mojris and rubber chappals. When he is at home he wears a shorter kurta. Everything made for Javed is hand stitched and that adds a lot of uniqueness to his garments.

Colour palette

His colour palette is nothing dramatically exuberant; it is just brighter vegetable colours that we used to get in those days and also some warmer tones. In 1910 there was no electricity so we chose garments and colours that would look good with natural light like torches, marshalls and gas lamps. My favourite colours on him in the 1910 chapter are his mustard pathani and his black pathani.
