Giselle Monteiro
First Test: This Brazilian model took everyone by surprise when she effortless played the role of the Punjabi kudi 'Harleen Kaur' in the super-hit Love Aaj Kal.
Performance: The makers of Love Aaj Kal did a smart thing by not revealing Giselle's identity till the film released. In fact when people came out of the film, they were curious to find out who was the actress who played the role of Harleen Kaur. But obviously they were in for a shock of their lives on discovering that the Punjabi kudi was actually a Brazilian model Giselle Monteiro. Needless to say, Giselle's performance was widely appreciated by one and all.
The year 2009 saw a lot of new talent burst onto the Hindi film industry. However, unlike some of the recent years, there were not too many debutants who left a strong impression in the minds of the audience. We at Bollywood Hungama take a look at some of the graduates of the 'Class of 2009' and also give a brief report card of their performance.
Mahie Gill
First Test: This Punjabi kudi displayed a lot of spunk as the feisty 'Paro' in Anurag Kashyap's much talked about Dev D.
Performance: As the new age Paro who has no inhibitions in making love to her lover in the grass fields, Mahie struck the right notes. Even in her second film Gulaal (also directed by Anurag Kashyap), Mahie's item number 'Ranaji' drew in a lot of ceetis and taalis. However, films like Aagey Se Right and Pal Pal Dil Ke Saath will be black spots in her report card this year.
Future Plan Of Action: Mahie will be next seen alongside Irrfan Khan in Paan Singh Tomar
First Test: When the promos of Dev D first hit TV screens, everybody was shocked to see a firang girl play the role of Chandramukhi. Only when the film neared release, did people know that the girl was Kalki Koechlin who is half French and half Tamilian.
Performance: Kalki's portrayal of the modern day Chandramukhi aka 'Chanda' was something which took a lot of people by surprise. Playing a call girl, Kalki got the right emotions and what's more unlike the original Devdas even got the hero in the end of the film.
Future Plan Of Action: Post Dev D, Kalki has been more in the news for her relationship with Anurag Kashyap. Little wonder then that she will be next seen in Anurag Kashyap's thriller That Girl In Yellow Boots.
First Test: She was once the Queen of the small screen and made her debut in Bollywood with the not so tasty Aloo Chaat.
Performance: Despite the film being panned by critics, Aamna didn't perform too badly in her role of a simple Muslim girl in love with a Hindu boy. If Aloo Chaat was a disaster at the B.O., Aamna's next release Aao Wish Karein was even worse. The film where she was once again paired opposite Aftab Shivdasani came and sank without a trace leaving Aamna wishing that she hadn't done the film.
First Test: His was probably the biggest launch of the year. Son of veteran producer Vashu Bhagnani, Jackky made his debut with the romantic thriller Kal Kissne Dekha directed by Vivek Sharma.
Performance: Kal Kissne Dekha was among the first films to open after the multiplex strike ended, yet the film hardly found any takers. Despite Jackky doing everything that a debutant does (action, dance, romance, comedy) his performance and the film in particular was not highly spoken of.
Future Plan Of Action: Jaccky will once again try his luck at the B.O. with yet another film Faltu which also stars Sanjay Dutt in a pivotal role.
