Yash Raj Films’ last two spy movies turned out to be blockbusters in the form of War and, the recent release, Pathaan. The common point in both the movies is that Abbas Tyrewala has penned the dialogues. In other words, he got a chance to work closely with Aditya Chopra, the head honcho of Yash Raj Films, on the scripting of two films.
In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, Tyrewala said that while working with Chopra he realized that he doesn’t behave like the topmost person of the biggest production house in India. “When it comes to working with Adi, you cannot be thinking about the top production house of India,” he said. “All that is distracting. He is somebody who at that time is thinking of himself as a writer. He is not sitting down with you as, ‘I am the head of YRF and therefore my opinion is important.’ He sees himself in that time as a fellow writer.”
He added, “So, you are never sitting in awe saying, ‘Arre main toh boss ke saath baitha hoon.’ You are sitting with somebody who has got very strong ideas and who is equally respectful of your ideas. The reason why I say that Adi is by far the best producer I have worked with along with Aamir Khan is that they have consistency that very few people have.”
Elaborating on the consistency through an example, Tyrewala shared that there are times when you narrate something to the likes of Chopra and Aamir and they list down what they like or dislike about it. “And then for any reason, they get busy with something else and then we get back three months later. And when we sit down on the same scene, their reaction will be extremely consistent. They will still remember exactly what they had liked, hadn’t liked and even what their suggestion was; even after three or even six months.”
This, according to Tyrewala, is like a blessing for writers. “They are not going to change their mind because Shah Rukh said this and Salman said this or if a distributor made them insecure or somebody else has another opinion; and now Adi and Siddharth have changed their minds completely, so we have to rewrite the whole scene. It is like saying fine once, it stays fine or if they say they are not convinced about it, that is what they mean. So that consistency saves everyone a lot of time, heartache, frustration and energy,” he said.
Tyrewala added that one doesn’t get such experiences often in the industry. “That (changing the mind later and having to rewrite the scene) happens on so many films that when you work with people where it doesn’t happen, it is one of the best things for a professional,” he said.
Tyrewala’s next project is the yet untitled espionage thriller on Disney+ Hotstar, which he has written and created.
