Rahman’s best songs of his career have been added as a bonus. Have a pleasure musical ride with 'Rang De Basanti', 'Ghanan Ghanan’, Hum Hai Iss Pal Yahan’, 'Dheeme Dheeme' and 'Yeh Rishta'.

For a film by the classy filmmaker and coming out from a classy musicial, Guru leaves by all the hype. It truly deserves all accolades for the impact that it creates. Its truly so fulfilling and creative. 'Ek Lo Ek Muft and 'Baazi Laga' are fun numbers while 'Barso Re', 'Bin Tere' and 'Mayya' add to the category of love ballads while 'Jaage Hain' and 'Ay Hairathe' are so classy. Going by Rehman’s style of music, the long might not impress you at the very instant, but gradually and with the films release, the album would surely get its due.

Next up is an orchestral piece, Jaage Hain. This is one of those light-hearted tunes that are great to fall asleep to. Chitra’s opening line is a treat, and very slowly leads us into a soft play of the strings. Rahman is known for his use of choral groups, and we hear one throughout this orchestration: The Madras Choral Group. Rahman was able to fine-rune his orchestral skills quite nicely after his fascinating outing in Bose – The Forgotten Hero. After he waves his baton it’s his turn to render the opening lines…and he does so in marvelous fashion. Gulzar saab’s lyrics are extremely sweet, and one only wishes he got to write a little more poetry for this piece. Nonetheless, Rahman only adds to his versatility here.

Like most of Rahman's music, this one grows on you. So forget about the Law of Marginal Utility that Eco profs drilled into your head and keep rewinding.

Some compensation comes in the form of the last number Jaage Hain, which closes the album on a high note. Rich in orchestration and musical nuances, Jaage Hain lingers on even after it is over. Gulzar’s lyrics are inspiring and Chitra sings the song with the required emotive appeal. After the song’s pace is set, Rahman joins Chitra on the microphone and moves up and down through the musical scale. The orchestra swells, the pitch is raised and the song ends at a crescendo. Undoubtedly, Jaage Hain is one of the best songs of ‘Guru’.

Tere Bina is vintage AR at his best. The moment this spirited song starts, you get surprised with its sheer novelty value. Moreover, you also get to hear an inspired Rahman letting you have a sneak peek inside his golden spirit. There’s the unmistakable triumph of an at-ease tabla theka taking things forward as if moving ahead on a camel ride through a charmingly cool desert evening. There’s a sufiyana element in the song reminding you of the spirit of Dumadum Mast Qalandar. The additional vocals of Chinmayee, Murtaza and Qadir inject a haunting feel while AR’s playing-around-with-sargam in the middle has a magical effect. Fabulous string arrangements coupled with guitar (Sounding like a sitar) strains makes Tere Bina a fantastically produced song that moves you effortlessly.

The finale is the goose-flesh moment, undoubtedly the best song of the seven-number soundtrack, Jaage Hain. The orchestra rises and the strings swell to conjure up visions of a great beyond. A song full of cinematic promise.

Guru has the trademark Rahman signature all over the album, and - as my friend pointed out - a distinct southy feel to it. But this Mani Ratnam-A.R. Rahman combine provides exactly what you'd expect - the best.

The number is the sole disappointment in the album. The lyrics deals with gambling and money and has tried to be peppy. But, this time Rahman could not create a magic. The music is high paced and gets a little catchy at the latter stage. Udit Narayan and Swetha are the main crooners, while “Kabhi Neem Neem” girl Madhushree didn’t have much to offer.

"Mayya Mayaa", a track inspired by Arabian music brings the album back on track and recovers from the horrid "Ek Lo Ek Muft. The sensual voice of Maryem Toller and the sexy beats of Arabia make the song explode and express total sensuality. It's no guess Mallika Sherawat will be shown gyrating to the song...
