First and foremost, the film is clearly an honest attempt to project a good idea on the bigscreen, but the charitable editing and sloppy script have done more damage than repair to the overall prospects of the film at the box office.

On the whole the film truly belongs to Kunal Khemu who has been blessed to star as the solo lead in a film that gives him a lot of scope to express his talent. Kunal is absolutely fabulous in a double role enacting both the characters with ease. Kunal grooves with panache, fights with elegance and delivers even the most complex of dialogues with a lot of emotion.

The film moves at a very slow pace, and should have been better edited. Music is quite drab too, except for the songs, Do I Love You and Ajnabi.

Frankly, hours after this Super Star ding dong, you’re haunted by the face of Kunal Khemmu, Kunal Khemmu, Kunal Khemmu. Several times, he states that the recipe for superstardom is to boil, bake and simmer ingredients from Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. Problem: even they haven’t ever been treated to Greta Garboji-style close-ups. Ever.

If Superstar stays alive through some rather maudlin scenes, it is only because Kunal Khemmu, who is a promising actor, makes sense of it. Though he seems more at home in the part of the tapori struggler he also negotiates the more serious scenes by expressing through his eyes. Both the girls cast opposite him look older than him.

Kunal Khemmu is the only saving grace of this half-baked recipe. Super Star is not a bad film but had a lot of potential to be better, which it isn’t able to tap.
