After doing a couple of TV shows, Yami Gautam made her film debut with Vicky Donor in 2012. In her six year long journey in the Hindi film industry, the actress has done a gamut of roles and her career had its share of ups and downs. Yami, who was seen in two big ticket films (Kaabil and Sarkar 3) last year, plays a lawyer in director Shree Narayan Singh’s new film Batti Gul Meter Chalu which is based on the issue of power-theft in India.
The cast of the film is headlined by Shahid Kapoor, who also plays the role of a lawyer, and finds Gulnar, the character that Yami plays, as his opponent in the courtroom. Though Yami plays a crucial role in the film, it is Shraddha who is paired opposite Shahid and is being marketed as the female of the film. When asked whether she was apprehensive about playing a character which was not the typical romantic lead in the film, she answers, “The answer lies in your question. I do not want to do anything typical. It is not everyday that I get to do something that is different and unique but when I get an opportunity to do something which I have not done before, I lap it up.”
Interestingly, Yami was a law student back in Chandigarh before destiny brought her to Mumbai for a modelling assignment which in turn resulted in her getting several acting offers. She was quite kicked about the fact that she was finally getting the opportunity to realise her dream of becoming a lawyer in a film.
“When I heard the script for the first time, I got very excited at the prospect of playing a lawyer. I am very secure as an actor, so I have never really been bothered about the length of my role. Shraddha and I have well-demarcated roles. The story is about three friends but a large part of the film is set in the court. That is where my character Gulnar comes into the picture and plays an important role in taking the story forward.”
