There is always an expectation set on a Bollywood diva to look a certain way both on screen and off screen. Therefore, one grows up with certain expectation about celebrities in the B-town and associates bling, glitz and glamour with them. Well, though we dig the whole allure of a true blue Bollywood actress, it is interesting to note that with recent films, mainstream Bollywood actors are trying to break away this stereotype associated with them and are looking for a de-glam look in their movies. So naturally, their off screen appearance (during promotions or airport outings) influence this. Overall, it is thus safe to say that they have made clean, simple looks aspirational for youngsters out there which are totally great. Following are the actors who have left us impressed with their stunning de-glam transformation for their roles!
Alia Bhatt- Gully Boy
Alia Bhatt is a style chameleon. She can slip into any character with ease and her migrant worker turned junkie role from critically acclaimed Udta Punjab is a proof. We commend her film choices which has catapulted her to be one of the most talented actors today. She went de-glam very early in her career for Imtiaz Ali’s Highway and now, she is set to floor us with Ranveer Singh’s Gully Boy. Recently, her look from the film was leaked. Shooting in Dharavi, she faced the camera covered head to toe with very little make up and drab clothes.
Anushka Sharma – Pari, Sui-Dhaaga
Anushka entered Bollywood as a typical Yash Raj heroine alongside Shah Rukh Khan. Despite getting a mainstream, enviable debut, her resilience both off and on screen made her to be an actor of substance. She is returning to the silver screen with Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero on one hand but also has two interesting projects in the pipeline: Sui Dhaaga with Varun Dhawan and Pari with Bengali star Parambrata Chakraborty. One thing common between the two films is that both as the titular Pari and Mamta in Sui Dhaaga, Anushka shows a very earthy, rooted side to us. Since Pari is a horror flick, Anushka Sharma is mostly dressed in salwar-kurtas with loose long hair.
Rani Mukerji – Hichki
Once the reigning Queen of the box office, Rani Mukerji will be back in Yash Raj Films’ Hichki as a speech impaired teacher. What a treat it will be to witness the performer in her act in such a content heavy movie. Staying true to her part, the actress will be seen in her natural garb of a middle class school teacher. The best part about her styling is that it will complement the storyline and add gravitas to her character in the movie.
Sonam Kapoor – Pad Man
She is a raging fashionista and her red carpet transformation is almost Cindrella-like. A self-confessed clotheshorse, it was incredible how she restrained herself and the temptation to go all out for her character of a business student in Pad Man. She chose pure khadis, raw silks and organic fabrics throughout the film. Long, clean cut silhouettes in pastels added much needed intensity to her on screen persona.
Radhika Apte – Pad Man
While Sonam Kapoor played more of an urbane, chic part in the movie…Radhika Apte’s garb was that of a village simpleton. Her polyester printed sarees, fresh flowers in hair and sans make up look (with an exception of a red lipstick at times) made sure she was in the character.
