Rensil D’silva talks about how to make a thriller film

The most essential thing to keep in mind while making a thriller movie is its pace and the manner in which the suspense is treated till the end. A film-maker has to pay heed to minute details, and that is why most film-makers, prefer to make a comedy or a romantic film. However, with a growing audience for thriller films, there are some who have now ventures into this genre.

In India, the kind of thriller movies that we make are a mix of comedy and drama. In Bollywood, the general rule while making a thriller movie is to make it as dramatic as possible. There are a number of factors to be kept in mind while making a thriller film; each scene has to be created in a manner that will add to the excitement that is expected from a thriller.

The most important part is to keep the audience glued to the seat and create edge-of-the-sear drama. Music thus plays an important role in a thriller. The background score has to complement the dialogues and the situations of the scene as it adds to the drama. While, the dialogues can't be too verbose, one should also take care that there are not many blank moments in the film. The plot should move forward at a consistent pace. Movies like Kahaani and the television show 24 was full of drama and suspense, and that is why it was so successful. I remember the film, Gumnaam made in 1965; a thriller-suspense movie that also had a comic track with Mehmood providing comic relief.

But, now, I don't think it's required as there is a large audience for an authentic thriller film. Over the years, the content of a thriller has changed substantially, and film-makers are trying to make sleek films like they do in Hollywood. Unlike in the earlier days, when we were not very familiar with this genre and mixed up several elements, today, film-makers when making a thriller concentrate on how to create nail=biting moments. A lot of attention is being paid to choreographing action scenes.

With changing times, he audience for horror and thriller films is increasing, and such films are emerging as a popular genre. The directors therefore can't afford to make mistakes. The pace of the film should be fast and slick, and the film-maker cannot show slow scenes, as this will not go down well with the audience who love watching thrillers. It should also be edited well and unnecessary dialogue should be done away with. Another important factor while making a thriller is that it should not exceed two hours, as then the audience will start losing interest, if the film begins to drag.

My favourite movies are Sujoy Ghosh's Kahaani and The Usual Suspects by Bryan Singer. In both the movies the climax was extremely unexpected and breathtaking. This proves that the climax of the film is very important as that will make or mar is success. The audience should leave the theatre, marvelling at the climax in the film.
