Ranbir Kapoor 2.0: How this talented actor has rightfully got a second chance to prove his worth!

Three years ago, at this point in time, Ranbir Kapoor must have been feeling quite low. His most expensive film Bombay Velvet had released by then and had flopped badly. The numerous delays and the huge amount of negativity had already given a hint that the film is not quite promising. Yet, when this Rs. 120-crore-flick ended up with collections amounting to just Rs. 23.67 crore, it still gave everyone a huge jolt.

Ranbir Kapoor 2.0: How this talented actor has rightfully got a second chance to prove his worth!

For Ranbir, it was the peak of his unlucky phrase. After tasting profound success with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani in 2013, which almost got close to the Rs. 200 crore mark, the talented actor was touted as the next big thing. But just immediately after Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, his next flick Besharam bombed. The actor was then missing from cinemas for more than a year and then finally came with Roy, in which he had a supporting role. The opening was quite good but the film went above the heads of the viewers. It was no surprise that the film quickly crashed and turned out to be Ranbir’s second back to back flop. This was followed by Bombay Velvet, the mother of all disasters. 6 months later, he gave Tamasha, co-starring Deepika Padukone, and directed by Imtiaz Ali. The film got critical acclaim but it didn’t translate into healthy box office numbers, unfortunately.

Success finally came his way in October 2016 when Karan Johar’s directorial venture Ae Dil Hai Mushkil turned out to be a commercial success, even crossing the Rs. 100 crore mark! But the damage was done. Ranbir’s next flick, Jagga Jasoos, finally released in July 2017 after numerous delays. It was too costly and didn’t make the desire numbers at the box office. The comforting factor was that at least it didn’t bomb as extremely as Bombay Velvet. But that was not enough.

Usually, after so many flops and damage to the reputation, most actors would struggle to get a big film, backed by a successful director. But in case of Ranbir Kapoor, that never happened. The industry never lost faith in his potential. And rightly so! Ever since he debuted in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2007 Diwali release Saawariya, he became the heartthrob of the nation. He did films of various genres like Bachna Ae Haseeno, Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani, Rocket Singh: Salesman Of The Year, Raajneeti, Rockstar, Barfi etc and he made it clear that his versatility is unparalleled. After Hrithik Roshan debuted in 2000 with Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai, no actor had come close to being called a superstar. Finally, the wait had ended with Ranbir Kapoor. He proved he’s irreplaceable and one of the best in the business.

As a result, despite his very bad phase, filmmakers didn’t lose trust in him and neither did the moviegoers! As a result, even when he was at a low, he got an offer from none other than Rajkumar Hirani, the director with 100% success track record. And the film was the ambitious Sanjay Dutt biopic, titled Sanju. All of Hirani’s films have been huge hits and Sanju also is expected to be another blockbuster. Yes, there are doubts considering the controversial subject. But in Hirani we trust! The chances are definitely there that Sanju will be a film to watch out for!

After Sanju, Ranbir Kapoor’s next will release on Independence Day 2019 – Brahmastra. It’s a VFX heavy film with a stellar cast comprising of Ranbir, Alia Bhatt and Amitabh Bachchan. Ayan Mukerji, who has given memorable films like Wake Up Sid and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, is at the helm of affairs. With such a desi name and with such a huge scale, Brahmastra definitely will be a film that will arouse a lot of curiosity. The content will then speak but the buzz will surely be enough to get hordes of moviegoers, at least in the first three days.

Ranbir Kapoor will then move on to Shamshera, directed by Agneepath director Karan Malhotra. He’s known for his massy, dramatic films. The teaser video of this film was unveiled some days ago by its producers, Yash Raj Films, and it looks grand and visually spectacular! Moreover, Sanjay Dutt plays the arch nemesis. Surely a film that can work wonders!

And that’s not all! Ranbir Kapoor will also be seen in Luv Ranjan’s next, who recently gave a Rs. 100 crore film in Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. Ranbir’s co-star is Ajay Devgn and this unusual casting has already made viewers and trade excited. It’s a Luv Ranjan film and hence, expect a lot of humour, entertainment and dhamaal!

What’s interesting to note about these four upcoming films of Ranbir Kapoor is that all of them are massy and have a pan-India appeal. And that’s very important for a film to have a wider reach. This is where Ranbir Kapoor had faltered. Bombay Velvet, Tamasha, Roy and to an extent, even Jagga Jasoos didn’t have that kind of an appeal and were more of multiplex, urban films. Thankfully, Sanju, Brahmastra, Shamshera and Luv Ranjan film have the potential to work even in the tier 2 and tier 3 cities, and that’s when the film crosses the Rs. 200 and even Rs. 300 crore marks. The only thing that’s important is that content the needs to work. If that happens, the nothing like it. Ranbir Kapoor would become one of the biggest superstars of Indian Cinema, which he rightfully deserves to be!
