Koffee With Karan 5: Shahid Kapoor praises arranged marriages and talks about him being a creep

After much talk, yesterday the popular television chat show Koffee With Karan finally featured one of Bollywood’s most talked about couples Shahid Kapoor and Mira Rajput. The show that currently is in its fifth season started off with host Karan Johar welcoming the couple on sets, with an emphasis on Mira’s first ever appearance on a chat show. From here on both Shahid and Mira found themselves in crossfire of questions from the host, making for a fun filled episode. But for those who missed the telecast, here are a few things you might want to catch up on.

Bollywood – the industry of inbreeding:

Welcoming the two guests, Shahid Kapoor and Mira Rajput, the show’s host Karan Johar began with a claim that he was shocked when Shahid got married. “Shahid’s wedding was a shock for me for two reasons, one was that he was actually getting married and second was for the fact that he chose to get married to someone from outside the industry. We are an industry of inbreeding and this was totally a shock, considering the media coverage on Shahid and his linkups”, commented Karan.

Fourth time lucky:

Interestingly, though it was Mira’s first appearance on the show, Shahid has been present in all previous seasons, each time with one of his rumoured link ups. Commenting on the same Karan said, “So Shahid it seems like it is fourth time lucky for you with finding your true love Mira”. But, Shahid responded with a zinger saying, “Only fourth if that is what you think.” Going by the banter we wonder how many other ‘relationships’ Shahid had?

When Mira began Bollywood bashing at dinner:

The hot topic of conversation on the show was obviously how Shahid and Mira met and what was their initial reaction to the proposed union. Talking about her first time meeting Shahid parents, Pankaj Kapoor and Supriya Pathak, Mira explained, “We met through family, and were told that we share the same path and the same faith, that was important to us. As for meeting his parents, I was invited to a family friend’s house for lunch and wasn’t told that I would be meeting a movie star as such. So I arrived there sat down at the table with my sister and began Bollywood bashing, like talking about the trend of item songs and the poor lyrics in the newer tracks. And all the while my parents and his were just sitting there at the same table.”

When Mira’s mother mistook the proposal:

Revealing a detail of the entire period before his courtship with Mira began, Shahid revealed that Mira’s mother initially thought that the proposal was not for Shahid, but instead for his younger brother. “Mira’s mom thought it was for my younger brother since he is age wise more in her bracket than me. I was apparently too old”.

Shahid Kapoor and his loneliness:

Shahid has always been the focus of the media for his rumoured link ups with his leading ladies, but not many may know that Shahid in fact did go through a period of loneliness. “I had been single for four years and I was tired of looking around for somebody to spend the rest of my life with. I used to crave for somebody to share things with. During this period I was rather lonely, especially when I would go back home”, revealed Shahid.

Arranged marriage was quite like Vivaah:

Talking about the first time Shahid Kapoor met Mira Rajput, the actor stated that it was quite like his film Vivaah but different. “I went to Delhi on November 30 to meet Mira, and we were all there her parents and mine, and while they talked, we were kind of told to go be by ourselves without being actually told to do so. So we went to a friend’s house and spent the next seven hours talking to each other. That was when I realized that, if I could talk for seven hours and not realize the time, she had to be the one”.

When Shahid shocked Mira’s dad:

Revealing a funny incident that happened before their marriage, Shahid and Mira explained the incident when Shahid literally shocked her father. “It was during my Udta Punjab days, when I was shooting for the film in my avatar as Tommy, complete with a pony tail and coloured hair. I went to Mira’s place and her father opened the door and he was like, ‘Hello Betaaa…’ but his expression on seeing me was totally confused. He didn’t know what had happened. Later Mira said when we get married you cannot have any colour in your hair and she was serious about it.”

Arranged versus love marriage, which one is better:

Mid way though the show, when the topic came to the merits of arranged marriage, Shahid was more than vocal praising it. “I am all for arranged marriages. It is like you fall in love with the person after you get married, as compared to love marriages when that initial rush of love happens before the marriage and later you spend a lot of time looking back and waiting for those times to come again.”

Age is just a number:

The massive age difference between Shahid Kapoor and Mira Rajput has already occupied quite a bit of print space thanks to the media. But explaining the reality of the situation Shahid revealed, “Yes the age difference meant that it was initially a bit hard to relate to each other, and we did face quite a few speedbumps along the way. But then as we spent more time with each other the speedbumps worked themselves out”. After this revelatory comment, Shahid let loose a sharp jibe aimed at Karan, “At 32 I felt the age gap, tera kya hoga Karan?”

Shahid burps, Mira steals the blankets:

Towards the end of the show, host Karan Johar decided to ask Shahid and Mira what annoyed them the most about their other half. Revealing a rather embarrassing habit of Shahid, Mira added, “Shahid burps a lot and that is really annoying.” When prodded further she added, “He snores sometimes when he is really tired, but he burps more”. On his part Shahid who was already pink in the face revealed that he constantly has to fight for the blanket, “Mira has that thing that she will set the air-conditioner to minimum and sleep with three blankets, I have to pull mine for her ever now and then or freeze”.

Shahid Kapoor the pervert:

While most of the show was rather revelatory as far as Shahid and Mira’s relationship goes, the climax was definitely a not to be missed with Shahid talking about his younger days as a pervert. In fact when Karan asked Mira who she really loved from the industry, her response to was Twinkle Khanna. Interestingly, Shahid too felt the same recalling an incident from when he was 12, “Raj Babbar’s son and me used to wait in the pool for Twinkle to come for a swim, and we were all of 12 years old at that time”.
