“I was totally blown away by Naureen’s dignity, grace and persona” – Prachi Desai

en Bollywood News “I was totally blown away by Naureen’s dignity, grace and persona” – Prachi Desai

We may not have seen the sweet and svelte Prachi Desai on the silver screen much recently. But in the days to come, she has promised to more than make up for the lost time. She will be soon seen in the much awaited flick Azhar, which she insists is not a biopic. We abide.

In a freewheeling interview to Bollywood Hungama, Prachi Desai speaks about the reason for the delay in films, her life so far and many other things about her personal and professional life. Without much ado, here's presenting the one and only Prachi Desai…

Prachi, to start with, there has been a huge gap between your last two release and Azhar. Was it a conscious decision or it just happened that way?
I really don't know what to say, because, I have been around and not gone anywhere (smiles). All of last year, I had been filming Azhar and Rock On 2. I do understand that, if people don't see me on screen that is considered as a 'gap'. Additionally, I also lost out on time because of the certain projects that I was going to do and which did not work out for whatever reasons. I know that time is everything for an actor. Now, I am going to make up for the loss of time (laughs). Additionally, I also blame it for the lack of opportunities. I am not saying to think out of the box. All that I am saying is that just see me for the real person that I am. I get crazy reactions when people see me in real. I think that the people have put me in a rut, in other words, stereotyped me with the same kind of roles that I had done before.

What is it that you are doing to break that rut?
Look at the way I am looking! I am so young. What more can I do! Unfortunately, I don't have a father who can produce films for me, or my father's friends also can't produce films for me. I am not an industry kid.

Do you miss having a proverbial godfather?
Not at all. I would rather take pride in the fact that I am a self-made girl. The sense of achievement is a much better feeling.

What was your immediate reaction when the role was offered to you? Did you give your nod at the first go itself or you took time to say yes?
Honestly, when I was offered the role of Naureen, I was so happy, as I knew that I had hit the jackpot. It's the best role in the film. Tony (the film's director) had watched the 'Pee loon' song on TV; he thought that this is the pair (Emraan and Prachi) that he want to bring back. I really don't know why people took so long, but, thanks to Tony that he brought us together. He called me stating that he wanted to talk to me about his next film. Even though I was aware that he was working on Azhar, the only concern was which role he will be offering to me. I instantly said yes to the role as everything about the role was extremely appealing to me.

Tell us a bit about your character?
I play the role of Naureen, who happens to be Azhar's wife. It was one of the most difficult roles to play. I play the role which starts off as a 16 year old teenager till around ten years ahead or so.

That means you play the quintessential Hyderabadi wife…
Yes … (smiles)

That means we will get to hear you mouthing dialogues in the trademarked Hyderabadi accent?
Not really. Even though my character does not talk in the Hyderabadi accent, there are characters in the film who talk in that lingo.

Did you meet Naureen in real life? How was the meeting like?
The meeting was good. The moment I met her, I was totally in awe of her as I was stunned and spellbound. I hope I did not freak her out as I was staring at her all through out. The best part about the meeting was that, both Tony as well as Abbas (Azharuddin's son) revealed that Naureen was my biggest fan, which kind of boosted my confidence like never before. when I met her, I did not ask her a million questions which were popping in my mind. Rather, I sat with her and started observing her closely. My observation answered many of my questions. I was totally blown away by her dignity, grace and her persona.

What was the brief about your role that was given to you?
The brief was that I had to absolutely stick to the role that was written, as it was written keeping in mind so many details about their real life. The other thing that I was told was to stick to the character through the information that we had, which was kind of tough. There's no Prachi Desai in the frame, it had only to be Naureen all the way. And all the credits for this goes to Tony.

What according to you is the USP of the film?
Firstly, it's the revelation about Azhar and his life's true story. The second USP of the film is that the film has Emraan and Prachi (smiles). We (Emraan and I) share a great chemistry on screen and we make each other look so great onscreen.

Do you think that Emraan Hashmi has evolved as a person ever since you both worked together in Once Upon A Time In Mumbai?
There's a world of a difference in Emraan since Once Upon A Time In Mumbai till now. Of course, he is still a bit of an industry recluse as you do not really see him in the parties. I think he is one of the most secure actors who is sure about he is doing and that's a rare quality in any actor. He is extremely professional and focussed about his work. He has got a great kick-ass sense of humour, which has only become nastier now (laughs).

Emraan's films and one liners go hand in hand. Which one liner from Azhar do you feel will get the nation hooked onto it?
"Mere naam mein hi Mohammad hai".

What will be your next film?

Right now, I am busy with Rock On 2. Besides that, there are a few things happening, which I will officially announce the moment it materialises.

You have been acting since many years and have also sung in your film. Are you planning to explore any other opportunities?
Its fabulous these days that one is getting an opportunity to explore one's varied talents. I was one of the first people who ever sang in their films.

Have you sung in Azhar?

No. but, in the future films, I hope that I will sing.

True to the saying 'Saving the best for the last, let me ask you this eternal and best question. Since you have Nargis Fakhri as your co-star in Azhar, can two actresses be friends?
Absolutely yes. Unfortunately, we can't keep in touch with each other as regularly as we may want to because of our busy schedules. But, one needs to have a look at the selfies galore that we had clicked amidst the shoot in order to know the camaraderie that we shared. We hit it off instantly the very moment we met.
