“I have different views as compared to ISRA” – Babul Supriyo: Part 2

en Bollywood News “I have different views as compared to ISRA” – Babul Supriyo: Part 2

Much has been said about the Copyright Act, ISRA (Indian Singers Rights Association) and SAI (Singers Association of India). Babul Supriyo is somebody who made no bones when it came to call a spade a spade. He is someone who feels that the foundation of the music industry is based on healthy symbiotic relationships. In a career spanning many years, Babul has indeed managed to carve a niche for himself and how!

While in the first part of his exclusive interview, he spoke about his humble beginnings, here's presenting the much awaited second part of the same, wherein he speaks about the Copyright Act, ISRA, SAI and much more.

You said that in the Copyright Act, the singer is as good as a vocal instrument. What did you mean by that?

That is what the Copyright Acts says, right! I feel that the medium of making money and the revenue generation has undergone lot of changes in the last few years. If you want the person who is sitting on the other side of the table to understand your problems, I think then even you need to understand his problems as well. I think that rules and regulations cannot be one sided. I have a slightly different opinion and view as compared to ISRA. Ever since I have come to Mumbai, and whenever there was a need was to put across my point, I always did that by myself. I don't think that I need any associations to dictate terms for me. I respect their views and I also want them to respect my views as well.

Tell us about the much talked about tiff between the producers and the singers.

The tiff is between the members of ISRA and SAI. I am not even a part of it. I don't even want to define that. You should call Sonu Nigam or someone else for the same. I have just spoken out as to why I do not want to be a part of this.

You had voluntarily exited the ISRA What's App (west) Group & SAI long back stating to ideological differences. What differences are we talking about?

I think that if I don't subscribe to certain ideology, then it would be hypocritical on my part to stay in the group and be a part of the conversations which I don't subscribe to. That's why I thought that it was just appropriate for me to simply leave the group. I am happy where I am and I want to take my career forward by representing myself in my own way. I wish ISRA and SAI all the very best.

You are someone who has always spoken your mind out. You said that 'you don't see a reason why signing a contract that may be required to sign by the producers, music labels & music directors should be an issue'.

I am already a part of the CMA (Cine Musicians Association). I have my own ideologies. If I have a different lookout, then I am entitled to the same. As long as I reach the studios, agreed to a mutually comfortable remuneration and as long as the makers don't stop me from singing those songs in my shows, I have no problems signing the contract.

Are you happy and satisfied with the recent amendment to the Copyright Act?

There are amendments that have been achieved in the Copyright Act. I really don't want to comment on that as I feel that, the Act addresses the larger issue of the musical fraternity. All that I can say is that it's definitely a welcome Act. But the cause of the music directors, lyricists and others, and the singers may not be equated in the same manner.

You said that you have 'existing royalty contracts' with many labels. Can you name them?

I have it with companies like Asha Audio, Universal, Tips, Sagarika, Venus.
