DVD Review: Rise of the Guardians

The Film

From the stables of DreamWorks, comes Rise Of The Guardians that's based on William Joyce's Guardians of Childhood book series. The film features the coming together of childhood fantasies of Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and the Sandman in an effort to save the world from the evil hands of Pitch.

Guardians opens with its protagonist Jack Frost (Chris Pine), a hoodied, white-haired teen, discovering his identity three hundred years ago. Though he has a power to produce frost by touch, unfortunately for the attention seeking lad no one can see him, only to later learn that his invisibility is the result of children not believing in him. From this point on, the film portrays the journey of Jack as he desperately tries to get children to believe in him.

Though aiding him in his journey is a burly Russian Santa (Alec Baldwin), with 'Naughty' and 'Nice' tattooed across his forearms, a human sized Australian to the core Easter Bunny (Huge Jackman), the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) a colorful small bird with even smaller ones as her assistants, The Sandman, short, golden, and forever silent, relying on pantomime to convey his ideas. The story follows Pitch's plot to take over the world by eliminating the Guardians by destroying children's belief in them.

Despite having a plausible theory of self discovery and world domination, the main protagonist, Frost, seems to be permanently gripped by self-doubt. While the cute and comedic moments are concentrated at the beginning and end.

Dreamers and Believers: The cast of Rise of the Guardians celebrates the voice actors with clips of them recording their lines, crew member praise and comments from the celebrities themselves.

Filmmakers' Commentary: Audio commentary features director Peter Ramsey and producers Christina Steinberg and Nancy Bernstein. They discuss elements as they arise, from a mix of creative and technical standpoints. Among the topics discussed are visuals, casting, and influences.

Conclusion

Though the animation and effects offer the viewer a visual treat, the film unlike DreamWork's earlier How To Train Your Dragon that featured the animation giant delve into a dark and adventurous story line, Guardians is a bit weaker. However, the film is a definitely thrilling experience for young kids.
