2015 was a bright year for the film industry with multiple films becoming money spinners at the box office. While a few of them did stand out from the rest, all in all, the year was highly profitable. In this Box Office analysis, we take a look at the Top Grossers of Bollywood breaking up their collections based on territories in India to understand which segment performed the best and for which films.
Evident from the tables is the fact that the Kabir Khan directed Salman Khan starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan has found takers across all diaspora, be it in metros like Mumbai and Delhi or even states like Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Assam, Mysore and others managing rank in the Top 3 Grossers in all territories. In fact the film takes the top slot as the Highest Grosser in 12 out of the 13 circuits listed, with only Tamil Nadu featuring the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Dilwale at number one. However the interesting part is that, while the entire list is quite literally dominated by Salman Khan films, the actor's second release in 2015, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, takes the second rank in 8 of the 13 circuits, while managing to rank as one of the Top 3 Grossers in 11 of the 13 segments.
Coming to the Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Varun Dhawan, KritiSanon starrer Dilwale, the film directed by Rohit Shetty ranks as one of the Top 3 in 7 of 13 territories. However, unlike Bajrangi Bhaijaan that captured the audiences in metros of Mumbai and Delhi, Dilwale misses out in these territories which constitute 40% of the box office receipts of a movie.
Another new aspect of Bollywood we witnessed in 2015 was with Karan Johar's Dharma Productions backing the Hindi release of the south film Bahubali. While this gambit paid of multifold for Dharma, Bahubali, which fast became a big money spinner has managed to gain a position among the Top 3 grossers in only 2 of 13 territories. With this ranking, the S.S. Rajamouli directed Bahubali becomes the first regional movie dubbed in Hindi to make its presence felt in Top 3. Sequels seemed to be the flavour of the season with multiple franchises featuring a release; however it is only the Kangna Ranaut, R. Madhavan starrer Tanu Weds Manu Returns (TWMR)that manages to rankamongthe Top three grossers in 3 of 13 territories.
Coming to the last big release of 2015, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani featuring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra that made headlines features as one of the Top 3 grossers in 3 of 13 territories. However, since the film continues running strongacross the country it is expected to enter the Top 3 charts in approximately another 5 circuits, including the Mumbai circuit that currently features Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Bahubali.
