Sachin - A Billion Dreams has seen a good weekend at the Box Office. The film brought in Rs. 27.85 crore over the weekend and if pre-release buzz is anything to go by, this could well have been the total for the entire week. However, audiences have clear shown good interest in checking out what does the docudrama have to offer and the manner in which collections continued to trickle in over the weekend, what with Rs. 10.25 crore more coming on Sunday, it is quite apparent that they liked what they saw.
This is indeed a first in India when an experiment like this has succeeded in theaters. What is all the more remarkable is that there was no on-your-face publicity for the film and of course the entire marketing campaign was not only very limited but also nowhere on the lines of a quintessential Bollywood release. This isn't all as even the director [James Erskine] wasn't spoken about much even after the release of film. Still, the film has done well just on the basis of name Sachin Tendulkar, something that ensured that audiences were interested in checking out the legendary cricketer's life story.
Now that the film has taken a start, one waits to see how much bigger does it grow from here. A film like this always runs the danger of exhausting its audiences during the opening itself (not that the film was expected to take one, but then the target audience seems to have already caught on to it over the weekend). It would be quite a pleasant development though for exhibitors and distributors if the film actually manages to hold well over the weekdays as well and register a healthy total. It is going to be a period of wait and watch.
