2018 has opened with a bang. Following up last year’s success at the box office with Dangal creating a wave, the New Year started on a high with the release of Padmaavat that stormed the box office. Despite the opposition the film faced the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial worked well at the box office. Now as we July nears to a close, it is time to look back at some of the haymakers of the year with a Half Yearly box office review. Not surprisingly, it is the recently released film Sanju that has been one of the most anticipated releases of 2018 that tops the charts followed by Padmaavat and the sleeper hit of the year Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety in quick succession.
Starting off when compared to last year, 2018 has so far been a rather good year for the industry. In fact, despite the plethora of releases, most films have gone on to do good business at the box office. For instance, in terms of number of films reaching the much coveted Rs.100 crore club, 2017 saw a total of 9 releases achieve this, while the first half of 2018 has already seen 7 films achieve this benchmark. If that wasn’t all, two of these seven films viz. Sanju and Padmaavat have gone on to enter not just the Rs. 200 cr but also the Rs. 300 cr club reinforcing the fact that 2018 has taken off on a flying start for the film industry.
In the case of Sanju, the Rajkumar Hirani directed venture which featured Ranbir Kapoor in the lead seems to have swept most of the records in the first half of 2018. From becoming the highest grossing film of the year to being the fastest film to enter the Rs. 200 and Rs. 300 cr club Sanju has bagged each of them. On the other hand, while Sanju has dominated the domestic box office records the Ranveer Singh – Deepika Padukone – Shahid Kapoor starrer Padmaavat comes in second with most of the overseas business records being claimed by the film.
However, it is the Luv Ranjan directorial Sonu Ke titu Ki Sweety that emerged as the sleeper hit of the year. Claiming the titles of being the film with the Highest Opening Day to Lifetime Multiple (India), the Highest Opening Weekend to Lifetime Multiple (India) and the Highest Opening Week to Lifetime Multiple (India), SKTKS ranks third on the list.
In terms of productions houses, Fox Star Studios under which Sanju release holds the title of being the highest earning production house, while Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone claim the titles of being the highest grossing male and female celebrity of the year with Sanju and Padmaavat respectively.
