KYPH & 16 December – Midweek Boxoffice Report

By Bollywood Hungama

The vacations have begun and though a sizeable section of the film industry feels that the collections of all new releases get a boost during this period, the two new releases – KYA YEHI PYAAR HAI and 16 DECEMBER – met with a mixed response throughout the country.

While the films in question started on an encouraging note at several centres, the opening at other centres wasn't as exciting. What could be the reason behind it? Is this a new trend? Definitely not!

Since the past few years, it has been noticed that films that open exceptionally well in some circuits need not necessarily take a flying start in other circuits. Films like SATYA and HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM did exceedingly well in a few territories, but weren't as strong at some.

Let's talk about the two new releases.

KYA YEHI PYAAR HAI and 16 DECEMBER were as different as chalk and cheese. If K.Y.P.H. was old-fashioned in concept and execution, 16 DECEMBER was so advanced in terms of plot and technique that a couple of sequences went over the top.

Let's have a look at the circuit-wise performance of both the films. An exclusive mid-week report by Indiafm.

KYA YEHI PYAAR HAI

MUMBAI CIRCUIT :

The opening in Mumbai was positive, since there were a lot of holidays in the week. The collections in the city-suburbs range from fairly good to not-too-strong. In Jamnagar, the collections are approx. 60 to 70%. In Pune and Sholapur, the collections are steady.

DELHI, UTTAR PRADESH :

The film took a satisfactory start in Delhi city, but an excellent start in Uttar Pradesh. The satellite promotion and the press conference prior to its release helped the film enormously. The collections in Delhi city subsequently were not too exciting.

WEST BENGAL & BIHAR :

The collections are not up to the mark in Kolkata. At several key stations of Bihar, the film opened to an average response.

C.P., C.I., RAJASTHAN :

The opening in Nagpur was good and the collections continue to be steady since there's no major opposition. In Indore, the collections have been affected due to the examination period. In Jaipur, the film took a flying start, thanks to an excellent pre-release publicity campaign, and the collections have been steady on the subsequent days.

SOUTH :

The start in Hyderabad was very encouraging, but the reports are mixed.

16 DECEMBER

MUMBAI CIRCUIT :

Since the film has been released at more than 25 cinema halls in Mumbai city and suburbs, the collections have been affected. The collections are better at 'A' class theatres, which are patronised by the gentry, but at mass-patronised theatres, the collections are not strong at all.

DELHI, UTTAR PRADESH :

The opening in Delhi city was so-so, but the collections were better in Uttar Pradesh. However, the reports continue to be mixed.

WEST BENGAL :

Since the film has been released in too many cinema halls in Kolkata, the collections have got divided. The reports are not encouraging.

C.P., C.I., RAJASTHAN :

The opening in Nagpur was heartening and the gentry is liking the film. In Indore, only the high society audiences have appreciated the film. In Jaipur, the reports aren't strong.

SOUTH :

The opening was alright in Hyderabad.
