When Sunny stormed Punjab:

Anil Sharma may have completed the shooting of GADAR-EK PREM KATHA, but he hasn’t forgotten the incidents that transpired during the making of this period film. The film, a love story set against the backdrop of partition, revolves around a Sikh, Tara Singh (Sunny Deol), who falls in love with Sakina, a Muslim girl (Amisha Patel). To lend authenticity to the goings-on, the director decided to shoot the film in Punjab, but there was one factor that kept bothering him Sunny Deols security. “Shooting with Sunny Deol in Punjab was an unattainable task, since the crowd would naturally go berserk seeing the Punjab da puttar in flesh and blood,” Anil Sharma recalls, adding, “Sunny was apprehensive as well, which explains why he never visited Punjab after BETAAB, his debut film. But what was in store for us cannot be described in mere words. “Although we promised Sunny heavy security, it was impossible for the thousand odd cops to control almost four lac people who visited the shooting venue each day. For them, Sunny’s coming to Punjab was akin to homecoming. People from all walks of life would surround our unit everyday, saying, ‘Sadda putar aaya hain’ or ‘Sadda bhai waapas aa gayaa’ and garland him.” No wonder then that even if a film starring the three Deols (Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby) fares below expectations in other circuits, it always manages to prove a safe bet in Punjab.
