Rs. 140 crores at stake in June

The release dates in June are likely to be reshuffled. Reason: DEEWAAR. With DEEWAAR getting postponed by one week [May 28 to June 4], there’s talk that AAN [scheduled for June 4] might be shifted ahead. After all, the clash of two mega projects in the same week is likely to cut into each other’s business. “That’s not true,” AAN producer Firoz A. Nadiadwala informs me, “I am in no mood to postpone my film. Even if DEEWAAR makes it in the same week, I wouldn’t budge.” Incidentally, Big B was supposed to essay the principal role in AAN initially. But due to certain reasons, the actor opted out of the project. With DEEWAAR now confirmed for June 4, it virtually seems like a Bachchan fest in June. Lined up on June 11 is another Big B starrer DEV. “We [Govind Nihalani, Applause and Entertainment One] are sticking to June 11. There’s no reason why we should postpone DEV to a further date,” DEV producer Manmohan Shetty states. The third Friday of June will witness the release of the third Big B starrer in a row, LAKSHYA. Though Bachchan may have gone on record to state that he’s merely a character actor now, most distributors feel that releasing three Big B films in three consecutive weeks is an unhealthy practice. At the rate things are going, with so many biggies scheduled for release in June [DEEWAAR, AAN, DEV, LAKSHYA, AAN], a whopping Rs. 140 cores is at stake next month. While AAN, DEV and GARV are about men in uniform [cops], DEEWAAR deals with POWs and LAKSHYA delves into the lives of the armed forces. The stage is set. Who do you think will win?
