Riya shakes a leg for James

Guess who was biting his nails at a private screening of MASTI last week? Ritesh Deshmukh. Reason: His parents were watching him act in a sex comedy. I’d informed them that it’s a sex comedy when I signed the film. Yet, I was nervous for those three hours as my parents watched my antics on screen, the youngster admits.

How did his parents react to the film and his performance in particular? They enjoyed the film. Though I was slightly apprehensive about how my father would relate to my character in MASTI, he didn’t raise eyebrows, nor did he give questioning looks, he smiles.

While dad Vilasrao Deshmukh left for a whirlwind tour the very next morning [the elections are just around the corner], Ritesh headed straight for cinema halls to gauge the audience reaction to his third film. I went to Imax Adlabs [a multiplex in Wadala, Mumbai] to see the first-day-first-show reactions to the film and was overwhelmed by the audience feedback, he adds.

How did the audience take to his performance? Something strange happened after the show ended. The moment people realized I was in the theatre, I could see the crowd swelling around me with each passing minute. Just as I was about to oblige a fan with an autograph, he requested me not to sign my name, but ‘Fattoo’, the character I am referred to in the film. That, for me, was a big compliment. That also made me realize that the character had clicked with the viewers.

Meanwhile, people in his hometown, Latur, have taken to the film in a big way. Serpentine queues are being witnessed outside the cinema hall screening the film. The viewers have freaked out on the comedy, he smiles.
