Producers take up ‘Obscene’ poster issue with police

After a string of producers and distributors being charged with obscenity it’s Hemangini Upadhyay’s turn now, producer of the movie Yehi Hai High Society. Based on a complaint from St. Xavier’s college lecturer Pratibha Naithani the producer has been booked under the Indian Penal Code. The police pulled down the posters of the movie from Capitol cinema in south Mumbai, where the film is being screened. As this battle rages on, representatives of the All India Motion Pictures and TV Producers Association (AIMPTPA) met the police commissioner A N Roy on Saturday. They gave the commissioner a copy of the guidelines they follow while approving publicity materials for films. Earlier makers and distributors of several films like Rog, Tezaab, FUN, Zeher have been hauled up for releasing ‘obscene’ publicity material. Most filmmakers complain that the police do not recognize the self-governing body’s authority. As the makers and police have conflicting views on this issue, Producer Mahesh Bhatt feels that the conflict will go on unless specific parameters are set up. Film makers also feel that in the event of a complaint, the police should either revert to the AIMPTPA or there should be a legislation on the issue.
