Neha, who has just one release to her credit [QAYAMAT], is making heads turn. Courtesy: Her dare-bare scenes in Deepak Shivdasani's much-talked-about JULIE. It was a difficult role to portray and I am so glad that I got a performance-oriented role so early in my career, Neha tells me.
Neha considers JULIE a landmark film in her career. How often do we get an opportunity to portray such challenging roles? I didn't think twice when Deepak narrated the script to me. JULIE also held a lot of significance because it was offered to me soon after QAYAMAT, which focused more on the heroes. I was just a part of the crowd in that film, she smiles.
Unlike some upstarts who indulge in a lot of dramebaazi and back out of their commitments while filming a sensuous sequence, Neha was game for those scenes in JULIE. I was well aware the kind of scenes I was required to do. Deepak had given me a complete narration before we began filming. In fact, I did a lot of homework before I approached this character, she confesses.
But what about those bare-all sequences? Was she comfortable going topless? I think this issue has been blown out of proportion. And my silence has only aggravated things. But I need to set the record straight. I haven't gone topless in JULIE, she says.
Please continue. I admit, I have exposed my back, till my waist. That's it. But no frontal nudity for me. And as far as exposing the back is concerned, haven't other actresses done it in the past? she asks. [JULIE director Deepak Shivdasani has also denied that the film has frontal nudity, while in conversation with this writer].
Neha continues in the same breath, JULIE is not a porn film, nor does the role demand the actress to go topless. In fact, we want women to watch the film because the film revolves around a woman. They'd be able to identify with the goings-on in the narrative. Such loose talk would only drive them away, she states.
But how about the hot smooch with Sanjay Kapoor? What's the big deal? Aren't times changing? The smooch is a pivotal part of the narrative. It's not been included for mere titillation. Like I said, I was well aware of the scenes before we started shooting. In any case, the scenes have been shot aesthetically, she adds.
Neha gives Deepak Shivdasani the due for giving the film an upmarket look, not making it look like a tacky, sleazy fare. He has shot it wonderfully well. Had it been a sleazy fare, the censors wouldn't have passed the film with hardly any cuts. In fact, I accompanied Deepak when the censors were viewing the film. I wanted to gauge the panel's reaction to the film, more specifically that of the ladies in the panel, she states.
And what was their feedback? They loved the film. Doesn't that say it all?
