Musafir’s music in 2 versions

While you’re reading this news-piece, Sanjay Gupta must’ve embarked on the non-stop shooting schedule of his new film MUSAFIR in Goa.

When announced, MUSAFIR starred Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Suniel Shetty, Mahesh Manjrekar and Priyanka Chopra in pivotal roles. But Priyanka decided to opt out, Gupta says, She wasn’t sure whether she could carry off the role. Sameera Reddy stepped in the project subsequently.

MUSAFIR is not one of those boring masala fares. It’s different. It has violence. It has sex. The leading lady is not a glamorous fixture. The men are no saints. Every character has something to do, he discloses.

Reportedly, one of the issues the film tackles is that of child abuse, but Gupta maintains a stoic silence since he doesn’t want to reveal much at this juncture.

MUSAFIR also witnessed another replacement before it went on the floors Aditya Pancholi stepped in Suniel Shetty’s shoes. Suniel’s dates were posing a problem. It didn’t match with the other actors’ dates. I couldn’t postpone the film anymore. That’s when we decided to part ways amicably, the director of KAANTE reveals.

This is the first time ‘foes’ Sanju and Anil are working with each other. They have had irreconcilable differences in the past and though there were offers to cast them together in various films, things just didn’t materialise.

MUSAFIR also brings ‘foes’ Anil Kapoor and Aditya Pancholi together for the first time. Not many are aware that the two actors weren’t on the best of terms due to a major controversy that occurred during the casting of Subhash Ghai’s TRIMURTI.

While MUSAFIR should be ready for release by mid-2004, Gupta has already started work on his new film, titled AYODHYA. I’m not trying to stir a hornet’s nest by raking up an issue. I’m merely trying to say that we shouldn’t repeat mistakes we’d committed earlier, is all that Gupta reveals about the film at this juncture.

While Gupta is currently working on the script himself [I’ll okay the first draft myself], there’s a strong possibility that eminent writers such as Tigmanshu Dhulia or Anjum Rajabali or Sridhar Raghavan will be roped in subsequently.

I can’t work on three films at a time, the techno-savvy director admits, We began filming PLAN after KAANTE was complete. Similarly, we began shooting MUSAFIR once PLAN got ready. Likewise, the moment MUSAFIR is complete, AYODHYA will go before the camera, he enthuses.

While Sanjay Dutt will essay a key role in AYODHYA, Gupta is yet to finalise the second actor for the project. He has to be a firebrand performer, otherwise the whole effort would be lost, he adds.

He continues, After my near-fatal accident in December 2002, I’ve decided to value life all the more. It’s no point working at a rapid pace if you’re not enjoying your work. That’s the reason why we don’t shoot on Sundays. Everyone needs to rewind and rejuvenate, he maintains.
