Renowned South filmmaker K. Balachander passed away in Chennai last evening, at the age of 84. The director-producer was unwell for quite some time, after the demise of one of his sons Kailasam in August 2014. K. Balachander was admitted to Kauvery Hospital in Chennai after he complained of high fever. However, over the days, due to age related complications, he contracted with urinary tract infection and was taken to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit).
Being one of the most prominent and respected filmmakers of South film industry, K. Balachander explored the genre of social issues yet he liked to make films on unconventional subjects. Starting his career in the mid 60s, Balachander went on to make films like Apoorva Raagangal which was also the acting debut of megastar Rajinikanth. On the other hand, K Balachander has done many films with Kamal Haasan along with the popular Hindi romance drama Ek Duje Ke Liye. He also produced the Arvind Swamy - Madhu starrer Roja.
Fondly known as 'Iyakkunar Sigaram', Ki. Balachander has won nine National Awards for his immense contribution to cinema and was also conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri, the ANR National Award and Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
He is survived by his wife Rajama, and son Prasanna and a daughter, Pushpa.
