Ismail Merchant no more

Filmmaker Ismail Merchant, 68, passed away yesterday afternoon at a London hospital. The veteran filmmaker had made some memorable movies in partnership with James Ivory. Merchant, reportedly, had been suffering from stomach ailments from the past few days. Merchant was born in Mumbai on Christmas day (December 25, 1936). In 1958, he traveled to the US to study business at New York University, but was soon sidetracked into the film world. Merchant made an impressive debut with In Custody, based on a novel by Anita Desai, and starring Shashi Kapoor, which won National Awards for best picture, best actor, best costume and best production design. His second directorial venture was, The Proprietor, shot in Paris. Merchant and Ivory, an American, made some 40 films together, including A Room with a View, Howard’s End, Heat and Dust, starring Shashi Kapoor and The Remains of the Day. At the time of his death, Merchant was working on The White Countess, a period drama starring Ralph Fiennes, Vanessa Redgrave and Natasha Richardson, and set in China.
