Here Come The Con Men

It’s always exciting to watch real-life father and son sharing the same screen space. Dharmendra and Sunny Deol have featured in a number of films, including SUNNY, SULTANAT, KSHATRIYA, VARDI and KAISE KAHOON KE PYAAR HAI. Sunil Dutt and Sanjay Dutt have featured in three films in the past, ROCKY, KSHATRIYA and MUNNABHAI M.B.B.S. Rajendra Kumar and Kumar Gaurav featured in LOVE STORY. More recently, Amitabh Bachchan and son Abhishek Bachchan were seen in BUNTY AUR BABLI and SARKAR. Now watch Feroz Khan and son Fardeen Khan in Pritish Nandy’s EK KHILADI EK HASEENA, the directorial debut of writer Suparn Verma. The real-life father and son had earlier shared the screen space in JANASHEEN, which, incidentally, was penned by Suparn. Casting Khan-saab [that’s how F.K. Sr. is addressed in the industry] and Fardeen in a project was the demand of the script, Suparn sets the record straight at the very outset, I’d written the film keeping Fardeen in mind. The way he talks, the wit and humor in his conversation, his mannerisms the role is close to Fardeen in more ways than one. For the role of Jehangir Khan — the king of white collar crime who has graduated from Harvard — Suparn couldn’t think of anyone else but F.K. Sr. Khan-saab loved the script and also the character. He was most relaxed on the sets. He wasn’t directing the film, nor was the father directing the son [F.K. Sr. has directed Fardeen in PREM AGGAN and JANASHEEN]. They [Feroz and Fardeen] share a terrific rapport in real life, which extended to reel-life as well. In fact, one of their scenes together happens to be a worth-remembering moment of the enterprise, Suparn states. EK KHILADI EK HASEENA had its share of hiccups before it took off. Bipasha Basu and Aditya Pancholi opted out of the film due to certain reasons and Koena Mitra and Gulshan Grover stepped in their shoes subsequently. But there’s no ill-feeling with Bipasha. She admits it’s one of the most fascinating scripts she’s encountered so far. The only hitch was matching her dates with the rest of the cast, the debutante director divulges. Suparn denies that the moviegoers would draw parallels with the recent release BUNTY AUR BABLI, since both B.A.B. and EK KHILADI EK HASEENA are con films. BUNTY AUR BABLI was more about two people from different backgrounds, their con jobs, their love story, the morality issue in the end. In EK KHILADI EK HASEENA, Fardeen is a con man, that’s his profession, this is what he does for a living. In fact, everybody is conning each other in the film. The series of cons take the story forward, he sets the record straight. Any inspirations? Yes and no! As an avid moviegoer, I’ve watched a number of con films in the past, but as a storyteller, it’s my homage to every con film I’ve seen so far, he smiles.
