He has been active in front of the camera for a decade now, considering his television sojourn. Around five years back he also made his big screen debut with Phoonk 2 (2010) followed by Maximum (2012). However, his real calling came with Kai Po Che (2013) where he was seen in a serious avtar and instantly noticed for his controlled act. Instead of jumping into every second offer that came his way, Amit Sadh decided to wait before picking up something worthwhile. This is where Guddu Rangeela came into picture. With director Subhash Kapoor at the helm of affairs and Arshad Warsi as the co-star, Amit was game.
Now that the film has released, it has also turned out to be more of a dramatic action flick, instead of being a comic caper that seemed on the cards. As a matter of fact, with his character inspired by Jai (from Sholay), Amit is shown as a skirt chaser who ends up finding himself amidst the bullets, bombs and swords as the film progresses.
"Well yes, there was always a larger issue (Khap) that was meant to be handled through the film," says Amit, "There was going to be humor but we never wanted to misdirect the audience. We never positioned Guddu Rangeela as just a fun or a happy film. We did keep a lot away from the promo as larger revelations would have erased the film of its suspense element. The film has a lot of adventure and thrills, which form the core of it actually to compliment the theme."
The film has been noticed for its obvious references to Sholay, which have also formed a source of inspiration at numerous junctures of the narrative.
"The best part about Guddu Rangeela is that it is not a frivolous film. There is a story and a big message to it. Hats off to Subhash (Kapoor) sir for the manner in which he has dealt with it," says Amit, who knows the filmmaker for over half a decade, "It may seem like Guddu and Rangeela have a Charlie Chaplin kind of persona where they try to smile through even the toughest of the situations in their life. Par jab paani sir ke upar se chala jaata hai then they don't have any other way out but to fight back."
The elaborate outdoor shooting for the film meant that Amit had a lot of off-screen bonding to share with his partner-in-crime, Arshad Warsi, as well.
"Arshad is very fond of me and I look up to him. He is one of the best actors of the country, and you can see that on screen in the manner in which he has underplayed the part and yet brought so much sensitivity. When I go to his home, he and his wife treat me like a kid. He is like a friend for me and it is this real life fondness which shows on screen. Jai aur Veeru ka toh pata nahi par Guddu aur Rangeela ki chemistry reel or real life, dono mein chal gayi," smiles Amit before signing off.
