Picking up from Kantaben’s humorous scenes from Kal Ho Na Ho, Dostana provides a comic relief in recessionary times with our lead duo of Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham pretending to be gay in order to rent a beautiful apartment in Miami. What begins as a lie to secure the apartment soon turns into a partnership that gives us a fresh spate of comic relief that has not been witnessed in such bold fashion in Bollywood. The jokes are mature and scenes are hilarious but never too loud. The humour has been toned well enough to obtain laughter from the classes as well as masses and that perhaps is what clicks for Dostana.
Kunal!! Oh Kunaaaal!! Oooohhh Kunaaaal!! Is the point where some would erupt with laughter while some would be utterly embarrassed......Anyway, the mutual agreement between Sameer (Abhishek) and Kunal (John) to act gay, leads them to secure the dream apartment that they would share with the stunning Neha (Priyanka Chopra). Pretending gay is clearly awkward for the duo and is hilarious for those watching them. The fun simply escalates to another level with Boman Irani and Kirron Kher who add their witty touch and natural brilliance to their characters. Kirron Kher is melodramatic but only in a hilarious manner while Boman Irani plays the suave agency head whose jarring dance on beedi jalaile is worth your ticket money itself. Abhishek enacts his character in sincere form with shades of over-the-top gay portrayal while John does not seem to grow up from being a model. His performance, as the case has been forever, is never convincing enough.
Unfortunately, the fun and frolic only lasts till the interval. Thereafter, you have the downfall of characterization in movies with Bobby Deol playing the most unimportant and meaningless role we have witnessed in a long time. Add to that, he does a terrible job at it and that too, with his loud Armani suits that leave us aghast. The plot also weakens in the second half with just fillers to let the movie drag to its eventuality. Often cheesy, banal, lame and silly, Dostana does not follow through with what it starts off as. You will be entertained, but only with spurts of comedy.
Thus, director Tarun Mansukhani gives us ‘half-an-entertainer’ which is accentuated by brilliant performances and sequences by Boman Irani and Kirron Kher. The music is just forgettable. So forgettable that once the song is over, you forget about it. But in the end, besides being an entertainer, Dostana has one unique element - It bonds two guys with a common ground who fake being gay to achieve a common end and in the process, find a true friend in their lives that leads to the discovery of trust, bonding and dostana.
